Should I equip all my saurus warriors with hand weapons or give a few of them spears, if so how many?
I would recommend the hand weapon option as it is cheaper, gives you a 4+ save in close combat and is not made worse by charging.
I would also recommend the hand weapons. If you want some spears for trying out you can model enough for two ranks. You only use the first two ranks in combat anyway so you should be fine in any friendly game(I would even be fine with one rank just so I didn't forget they had them). For tourneys however check with the coordinator. Some are very sticky when it comes to WYSIWYG and you may need the entire unit to be equipped with them.
Hand weapons, always. Spears cost more for Saurus than any other infantry, and aren't worth it. The +1 save will always serve you better than the extra attacks, as well as saving you points.
I think spears are worth a shout sometimes. A unit of saurus with spears and BSoQuetzl would make a great defensive unit.
the "predatory fighter" rule means if they use spears they only get one attack right??
and if they fight in two ranks with one attack each theres no difference at all lmao
bit silly really
i alwayd stay with hand weapon and shield
Well thank you for your input and I just recently replaced my spears with hand weapons (that's 24 saurus and 16 more to come).

Spears are useful only if you give certain answers to these questions...
Will the unit be TAKING charges?
Do you expect the enemy to ignore or nearly negate your armor saves anyway?
Do you expect the enemy to wipe out a considerable amount of your front line (so your only attacks may be 2nd rank), especially if S4 attacks are a threat to that enemy type?
Is the enemy you're fighting particularly bad in the T, armor save, or WS departments?
If you answer yes to 1, or especially more then 1 of these, the Spearmen might manage their points and may even be the better investment.
However if you're unsure it's usually best to default to HW/Shield.
Generally, you're losing 1/6 more troops to armor saves failing (in CC), but gaining about 33% more attacks (or more, if you took a charge and lost some of your front line). The key is knowing when that armor save isn't as important (it's being negated anyway, your foe has low WS or S to begin with), and when the attacks are important (fighting massed enemies with lots of combat res but weak troops, fighting foes that kill a considerable amount of your front line but have low combat res themselves... especially if they're T4 or less).
Spears warriors DO have their place, but they're more situational then HW/Shield so you need to have a reason to take them. In those specific cases they're great. Otherwise it's wasted points, on what is already one of the costliest core infantry in the game, in an army that's already pricey.

Making Sisters of Battle into Women of Battle
Give a Rep Star if you like what someone said. Especially Me. I'm an unabashed Star whore. Blame my 2nd grade teacher and those stupid good behavior stickers. I'm just conditioned. I'm the Pavlov's Dog of stars.
You win with VP, NOT with kills
I think that if you don't want to dish out the points for temple guard, then spears are pretty good, since you won't be running to get into combat anyways. If you're using a Slaan of course.
