I have both books in front of me and am going to compare lord kroak who i believe has been decimated by the new rules.
Yay! I thought when i read about the points decrease, finally I can get him without him taking up half my army! then i read on....
He now cannot posess other wizards or even use their line of sight when casting spells.
none of his first gen. spawning fluff counts now cause spawnings dont exist!
his unit strength is reduced and he is flammable, I know hes a mummy but he is also a slann cant he summon water to put out the fire?
his shield of the old ones is now always 3+ while still good it used to be 2+ when shooting.
all this alone is bad enough but then you get to his magic weapon changes.
First things first he has lost his mace of malachite, this was amazing as it could stop enemy heros with magic weapons running up to him and his guard and slicing him up.
He has lost the amulet of itza which gave him magic resistance(2) and added one power and one dispell dice to the main pool. this is partially countered by the addition of all his normal dice to the pools anyway but where is the magic resistance (2) or the extra dice?
He keeps the golden death mask but lets be honest it was always his worst item anyway.
and finally he loses the sacred standard which when his temple guard failed would nearly always see him hold on till support got through.
The only bonuses to the new changes that i can see is that he causes fear and is now unbreakable.
hmmm looking at it I think i would prefer old Kroak back. what do you guys think?
In his current incarnation he is pretty good, especially when you factor in the high milage you can get out of his one and only spell.
As it stands, I rarely find special characters to be useful pieces. In large games they can add some nice abilities and flavor, but in general they are overcosted for their power level.
I got to say though, the ways he got "worse" as you put it sound like just about 825 points worth of reductions.
I accept that but wouldnt you prefer an expensive Kroak who kicks ass or a still expensive one whos only good spell can be easily dispelled with a scroll. if it is then he cant attack for the rest of the phase. at least the old one could still knock you senseless with a different spell if you dispelled his best one.
Theres no limit on the number of times you can cast Deliverence of Itza.
And now, with his power dice added to the army pool, Kroak becomes very flexible. He can use the full army pool to lay down the smack with Deliverence, or really lend his power to other wizards by trippling the size of the army pool.
I do agree that all his protection stuff doesnt mean much. When thrown in a unit of templeguard he's not going to be getting hit much at all, and the unit sure as beans is going nowhere (Unbreakable, ItPsy, and Stubborn (LD 9))
That actually lines up a pretty good use for Mr. Kroak: plug him in a big unit of TG, engage the enemy lines, and start spaming lvl 1 or 2 Deliverence.
The mask is ok, but worthless if he's in a unit.
Kroak got nerfed hard, it's almost criminal how he got robbed.
Of course, all the Lizard SCs suck so it isn't that big of a surprise. After people cried so much about the Daemon and VC characters they decided to just nerf them to hell. DE and WoC have some good ones, but the Lizards have a ton of basically unplayable characters. Chakax, Tetto'Eko Kroq-Gar and Gor'Rok are ok, but the rest are garbage.

Lord Mazumundi in my opinion is the successor to Kroak, as he can use the runination spell plus whatever lore he chooses. Plus he can just choose, no need to guess and scatter. I may use Korak for fluff purproses but even with the reduced points, I don't know if id use him alot
I'd have to see what his new spell can do, even when spammed.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
Not too mention one casket of sorcery can steal his one damn spell. Also things like spell breaker. 600 pts of crap from a 30 pt magic item.
Have any of you actually every used Kroak before??
Just wondering... I had a mate who played LM who always ''boasted'' about Kroak, yet he never used him. Why? He was simply unplayable. At a stupidly high cost, and with a massive downside (he dies -> you lose), i never once saw him in action.
Given he has been down-powered slightly and had his downside removed, his is now a much better SC at 600pts because you can actually use him. Oh, and he is now also balanced. If he ever did get used in his old incarnation, it would hardly make for a fun game
