I’ve been having a problem with an Empire player using a cannon to snipe out my Skink Priest, the only way I can see getting around this would be putting them in a unit of ranked up Skinks, so that he gets a “Look Out Sir.” The problem with this is that I usually don’t take a unit of rank-and-file Skinks because they don’t fit into the way I enjoy playing the army. So besides swapping out a unit of Skink Skirmishers for ranked Skinks, and staying out of the canons line of sight, do you have any other suggestions for protecting my Skink Priest from a cannon?
Put him on an engine of the gods, and take the 5+ ward save. Cast the 3rd spell in the heavens lore to get a 4+ ward save. And if you are in a skirmished unit, you still get a "look out sir" roll I believe. The term rank and file is just there to mean normal model (of course I could be wrong about this, but it is the way we have always played it).
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
kill the cannon crew
just kidding. I've found so far (I have yet to make a single 5+ward with my engine in 8 games) that putting the skink priest on an engine basically puts a giant target on his face.
you can put him in any unit that is 5+models and he will get a look out sir roll (skinks, skirmishers, saurus, whatever)
If you only have one skink priest, he's probably not doing much magically and therefore could hide in some trees and dispel stuff, but the safest place is in a unit of skirmishers in case you get lucky casting.
Thanks for all the help so far.
I seem to be mistaken thinking that Skirmishers don’t get the benefit of the Look Out Sir rule, now I just have to convince my opponent. (Just for reference, rank and files rule is on page 6 of the rule book.) My only concern with the Engine is the fact that it only takes one cannon ball (and some luck) to take out the Stegadon and he usually takes at least 2 cannons in his army.
Thanks again, and I’m still open to any other ideas
I stick him in some skirmishers or if he is just their to dispel I put him in some woods.
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
Use another stegadon to screen the engine until your terradons or skink skirmishers charge the cannon crew.
edit: on secound thoughts a screen doesnt work against cannons! Just use the secound steg to intimidate your opponent forcing him to shoort the regular steg first.
What I would do is just put skink priests in units of skinks then go for the cannon crew with uranons thunderbolt and/or the other unlimited range spell providing you have them of course. terradons may be worth considering here.
