I am new to the game and in fact am researching into which army I would like to purchase. A friend of mine plays the game and plays Empire. He in simple terms stated that is strategy is to use his cannon from a distance and weaken the opposition until they get to him then he finishes them off.
LM are one of the remaining options of armies that I am considering. How do you counter heavy artillery?
How many points are we talking about here generally? Obviously in theory, there is always the misfire danger for cannons, so that plus LORE OF METAL which has spells that can limit a War Machine's effectiveness are both options. Terradons are also a good way to get past, as is putting a skink shaman with a really good magic item or if that Shaman has Lore of Metal's war machine neutralizer spell (forget it's exact name) and can get back behind Empire lines you can neutralize them.
Otherwise, your going to have to be prepared to take a pounding from them. If he has a LOT of Cannons he's not going to have a lot of mortars or other units in the SPECIAL section.
Skink PRIESTS cannot take any other lore besides heaven. There are a couple things that lizardmen can do to try to nuetralize warmachines, one thing is a slann mage priest and the lore of metal.
Teradons also work pretty well. As does a Scar Vet with the Charm of the Jaguar Warrior. Obviously if you use the flying scar vet you will need some other magic so that the bound spell will work.
If you use an Engine of the Gods then the portent of warding can help as you get up to his lines.
Other than that our only real options are screening with skink skirmishers.
"I am the architect of fate!"
My general strategy with cannons is "die first, ask questions later"
But really I would say there is little you can do to defend against a lot of cannon fire, best chance is to get an assault on it early on. Lore of metal can only be taken with a Slaan and I think the rest of its spells will go a bit to waste on the empire army.
With an engine of the Gods, you can give anyone within 12" of it a ward save so long as the cannon is 12" or more away from the Steg. not the greatest ward save but its some defence against no defence.
oh, and screen with skinks I guess.
Eldar: Hakan-eth Craftworld - Lead by Head Farseer Jaraith 2500pts
Tau: Yihe'ya Sept - Lead by Shas'O Yihe'a Montro Myen Kauyon 1500pts
It will be for a 2000 pt army. I am interested in larger scale battle 2 to 3 k.
I will add that terrain can be a great help. Get behind some trees so you can't be shot at.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Theres plenty if options. The engine of the gods 5+ward net is very helpful. If you take a magic heavy list, lore of metal is very helpful, but also consider lore of life. The rain lord is brilliant against cannons, the howler wind puts paid to any crossbows and handguns, also warmachins are usually on hills or the egde of forests so master of stone and wood mean you can reach them even if they cant see you. Add a sacr-veteran with charm of the jaguar warrior and a unit of terradons an you'll massively reduce the gunline's effectiveness. remember that terradons can fly in and out of woods, which means you can veyr cloe to the enemy and stay out of harms way before dropping all the rocks and getting behind their lines.
Skinks can screen, but I dont think this is the best use for them.
Sounds like Slann is in your future.......
There are options with spells that can or can't work. I once saw someone use LORE OF SHADOWS and that spell that grants a flight manuever to a single character used to move a Scar Veteran Saurus over the enemy line right into I think something really powerful and took it out, so that is an option.
Otherwise, you need to have contingencies. A combination of BiG blocks of Saurus infantry (that in theory will draw fire) or Temple Gaurds; individual units of Kroxigors, ColdOne Cavalry; Terradons, and of course Stegadons and someone already mentioned the ENGINE OF THE GODS as a way to work it.
If I were taking a Empire army against Lizardmen, yeah, I would have the max amount of hellblasters and great cannons and mortars that I can get my hands on no matter what the cost.
