Hello there, i am a WOC player who is recently looking for a new army. I have been eyeing lizardmen or a long time now and i pretty much decided on going for them.
What i am not sure of is if to take a unit of razordons or a salamander pack. I tend to like the Razors more than salam but from what i saw in this forum, it seems that you all disagree with me.
The question is, should i take salamanders or razordons and why?
Salamanders seem to be the way to go if you take either.
better at armor penetration with forced leadership tests, less random.
Razordons do get a potential of 20 shots on a stand and shoot, but in likelyhood that aint going to happen.
Eldar: Hakan-eth Craftworld - Lead by Head Farseer Jaraith 2500pts
Tau: Yihe'ya Sept - Lead by Shas'O Yihe'a Montro Myen Kauyon 1500pts
Which one is better changes during situations and armies really. Salamanders are really good... unless your enemies has a high toughness or is immune to panic/psychology. But against the average trooper, the Salamanders are great. -3 to armor saves against their fire on top of the panic check if the enemy takes any casualties is a great boon. Made a bunch of High Elves run the other day.
However, if your fighting any of the now numerous armies who don't care about psychology, but love to charge you, Razordons can be spectacular. You will have to take them in a larger squade to make them effective (though I feel the same about Salamanders). Their stand and shoot can be great, but if a Razordon rolls at least one misfire on his artillery dice it will not shoot at all (same can be said of the Salamander... but one Salamander only rolls one die). strength 4 shots with no penalties for moving, standing and shooting, or long range can be fun and useful though.
Personally, out of the sake of money, I'm only running Salamanders, but I will attain some Razordons soon too. I would say get both if you can, but probably Salamanders if you can't both. Also, just to mention, it's best to get around 2 Salamanders, though 3 can be good if you have the leftover points.
If you have a unit of 3 salamanders or razordons, are all three required to fire on the same target, or can each acquire their own different target?
They all must fire at the same target.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
well I'm fairly new to lizardmen and don't know much but id say go with the salamanders. it can dish out some good damage and it will help get rid of regeneration. fire is just fun!
Salamanders are better against pretty much every army. They burn through armour and cause panic tests. Razordons are tricky to get the most out of. Where as salamanders will almost always have a good target to go for.
1 unit of 3 salamanders in 2000+ points is always a good choice, razordons not so much.
well if you can manage to march your raordons in front of a frenzied unit they can be quite effective. for example, a unit of 20 plague monks generally with two hand weapons so the have less armor, is going along its way trying to stay in battle line formation, so you, in all you smart wargamerness, march some razordons just close enough so that they will have to charge you. when the do you'll send out an average of 10 hits per razordon, taking out a good chunk of them and evening combat a little, but most importantly you messed your opponents battle line.
