I was at there the last two days seeing mainly the Lizardmen armies, but couldn't stay whole games, since I was moving around.
Was anyone from here and how did you manage with the scenarios?
Because I couldn't see any scoring units. I could see Skinks, Slanns, Engines (or multiples of it) and numerous stegadons, but saurus units nowhere to be seeing.
The mean average saurus units, of the armies I watched, was less than one.
Am i right in thinking the GT has no Comp restrictions? if so then that would be why you saw lots of slann and stegs and skinks.....its pretty filthy lol.
i dont know how the scenarios worked but from what i heard on the grapevine the lack of scoring units meant that lizards didnt fare too well.....or at least not vs some armies.
I went to the GT Heat 1 with my Lizards and came 32nd qhich qualifies me for a place in the GT final, I am fairly happy with the result. Ill put my list at the end of this post, there will be a few tweaks before for final if I take lizzies at all.
As for the scenarios, I won game 1 and game 4, against warriors of chaos and dark elves respectively, because of the 400 vps extra you got for special missions. Some of the scenarios were very hard to win and some armies were punished whilst others benefited. I played a practice game against a thorek army using the battle for the pass scenario, in this scenario we played along the long edge so the board was 4ft wide and 6ft long. This was a very unpleasant game due to the nature of Thorek.
You only needed to be unit strength 5 and not a character, single model, monster and handlers, or monster to claim quarters if I recall correctly, so skinks can claim objectives.
The WoC army I faced in game 1 was gateway lord, lvl 2 disk, 2 heros disks, 2 units of knights. 3 dragon ogres and filler. I opted to use my "kill more rare and special of my opponents" special mission in this game and pulled it off which led to me winning with 400 vs to his 60. He got 60 for getting 2 units of 5 hounds into my deployment. This scenario was pretty hard for my list as characters didnt count, my expensive units were slow moving and march blocked and my skinks were vulnerable to his magic and as a consequence I relied on the special mission to win game 1. The Slann took metal and over 6 turns (arghh I hate scrolls! most GT armies have 2 if not more it seems) I was able to melt the knights and the ancient minus the skink priest killed and broke the dragon ogres over turns 5 and 6 whilst I didnt lose my 2 special choices. My opponent took hills or woods I think as his mission and I was able to contest these so he got no points there.
In game 4 I was able to win due to my special mission. This game was against a fairly standard dark elf build. Cauldron, ASF black guard unit with assassin, unkillable lord and BSB master with hotek supported by a hydra and some chaff including a lvl1 scroll caddy (surprise! scrolls!) This scenario was another extremely hard one, you had to capture table quarters, your own were worth 100 vps and your opponents 300, so overall 800 vps were available for quarters plus 400 for your special mission, absolutely no other VPs mattered for this scenario. This meant I could sacrifice anything that was non scoring without worrying about leaking VPs. Knowing this I put everything I could into going for my special mission and holding my quarters whilst denying my opponent my quarters and trying to cover all bases regarding the missions. I hid my fast moving scoring units, so the cohorts and skirmishing skinks were either behind interposing scenery or loitering in woods to keep them alive. I was willing to sacrifice the units unable to score as a disctraction, my Slann and his retinure of temple guard accompanied by the engine marched straight down the field toward his army. I thought that being stubborn cold blooded ld8 and with the Slann being a BSB it would take some effort to remove them, giving me time to stealthily sneak for quarters. My opponent seemed unaware of the mission throughout the game and seemed to be trying to get points, he was shooting saurus and trying to get into combat with the temple, this suited me fine. Once in combat though I was disapointed over how long the temple guard were able to stick around, there were only 14 but it only took 3 game turns to kill all bar one but I was sneaky enough to move the slann to the front and issue a challenge and so he had only 1 black guard able to attack the remaining saurus and all I needed was that saurus alive to take a stubborn ld 8 test and hold his super killy unit up another turn.
As my skirmishing skinks were heading for his quarter he sent some harpies over toward the poor skinks but I had deployed my terradons in some woods nearby in case of such an eventuality and the terradons dutifully did their rock dropping job, wiping out all 5 harpies and then contesting some woods should that have been his objective (though I cant recall if fliers can claim/contest special missions but I think they can). At the end of the game I had lost everything worth any points, the Slann and his bunker, the engine, the spear saurus and my heroes had all died, however this did not matter in the this scenario because it came down to quarters. My skink cohorts contested my own quarters, denying the dark elf player 600 points, he held his own back quarter whilst he was fortunate enough to have a unit of repeater crossbows rally on the last turn to contest the quarter my skirmishing skinks had spent all game trying to stealthily take. Bummer. He was on 100 vps and I had nothing at this point, down to special missions again! This time I had opted for hills, one unit of cohorts was contesting a hill with 5 shades whilst the skirmishing skinks who had gone for the quarter had conveneintly found themselves atop a hill! 400 points in the bank and the dark elf player had failed in his objective of taking woods! Another win for my lizards due to the 400 vps for their special mission.
Out of 6 games I got my 400 vp special mission bonus in 5, which overall is pretty significant so if you are going to a heat bear that in mind. Also make sure you read and understand the scenarios, I think my opponent in game 4 failed to comprehend the objectives and as a consequence lost the game.
Overall I played against Warriors of Chaos, 2 Dark Elves, Orcs and Goblins (worst game of the GT for me) wood elves and vampire counts. It was a great weekend of gaming against 5 good opponents and I was glad to qualify to for the final.
