I just picked up some Lizards after having played 40K for a number of years. I haven't played much of anything in the last few years though. I do also have a Lizardmen Bloodbowl team, that also has not seen action in a time.
I am putting together an army around 1000-1500 points to start with the eventual goal being somewhere in the 2500 range or so.
I have the Lizard Battalion Box, but I'm curious. Is it generally worth it to drop the shield and hand weapon on the Saurus warriors to get the spear? I know then my 2nd rank will be able to attack as well, which on a 6 file block would mean like 24 attacks which is pretty awesome, but I would lose the +1 to armor save of the shield.
Could I change a partial group? Have shields up front, with spears in the rank behind? Am I just being a sissy and should I ditch the board and go for a big long poker? Or should I stick to the hard stuff and brace myself for the inevitable charge and hope they break upon me like water on rock?
Also, let me see if I have this right:
If have an Saurus Scar-Veteran on a Cold One does he by default then, if I take shield, have a 2+ armor save?
5+ for scaly skin, +1 for mount, +1 for shield +1 for cold one "barding" aka scales, which would give him as far as I can tell a 2+ save.
If that is the case, is there then any reason to take Light Armor on him? or would I be better off saving the points?
As far as I can reason this looks pretty lethal in a small army game:
Saurus Scar-Veteran with Cold One mount
Sword of Battle
The Maiming Shield
Looks like it'd run me 158 points for a nice lookin' leader. My math might be off, and if I'm forgetting something please let me know.
But he'd have a 2+ armor save with 2 wounds and 6 attacks, each at 5 WS/5 ST. I gotta figure most opponents will predominantly 3 or 4 WS on most trash mobs, which means assuming the dice work no better or worse than expected, he's hitting 3 things each time. Then wounding on average 2.
Am I right in assuming in a small game he is in fact that good?
As I'm about to go to sleep I can only give a quick remark until I have more time. Yes. Scar vets are very lethal. Once I'm all moved back into my dorm tomorrow I'll aid you along with by then most likely a few other LO members =]
Eternity Guard (SM) W-15/L-5/D-3
Lizardmen w16/ L1/ d2 :On hiatus since new rules... =/
I Think I just figured out that you can run a shield and spear. Sort of negating my first question. However that does raise another. Is it always beneficial to take the spears? And I don't know that I'll have enough spears to fully equip my saurus. I was thinking of converting my temple guards to saurus since I am not running with a slann yet.
More than happy to take pointers from you more experienced folk.
For the unit to count as having spears, you must have over half the models so configured. So if you have enough spears to convert half +1 of you saurus, you are good to go.
I would keep the temple guard, as you will probably want a slann eventually.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
So is there a way to model the light armor on the scar vet?
I heard of people using a temple guard head on a saurus body on a cold one mount.
Also, I hear the Skinks are amazing. Poison weapons and all.. but that does leave me with more questions. Blowdarts or Javelins+shield? Is it a big deal if they are not skirmishers?
The guy at my local GW said that an amazing combo is adding the Kroxigors with the requisite 8 skinks to get something that hits pretty freakin' hard. I've also heard that the Krox got a bit of a nerf.. what are you nice folks thoughts?
Just because I'm unfamiliar with the change. What happened to make them not nearly as good?
Yeah. That sucks. Is it worthwhile doing a musician and standard bearer in each saurus group?
edit: Thought of something... The Krox addon for Skink groups is 55pts, If the krox on his own is 55pts, what makes him so much worse in a group of skinks?
I'm sorry for my ignorance, I've only ever played 40k and bloodbowl, I have very limited experience with Fantasy. The models are fantastic though and the game seems as enjoyable which is why I wanted to get into it
