Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ever since my first game with my lizards Iíve been a big fan of skinks in all their forms, mostly due to a stray blowpipe killing a chaos knight that had just crushed a unit of saurus. Iíve still always used saurus heroes, though. So I decided to make my own special character, a skink chief named Uax Conqa (pronounced Orks Con-ka). Iíve tried many different kits, and may have possibly stumbled onto a, semi, effective one.
It is a skink chief, with blowpipe, light armor, dagger of sotek, the enchanted shield, and riding a terradon, though Iíve also considered switching the shield out with the carnosaur pendant. This would give me flight, killing blow, and a 3+ armor save (the terradon gives a 6+ right?), or 4+ armor save, and the chance to gain frenzy and another attack. So which do you guys think is better, and how effective would Uax Conqa be in a game? Iím thinking using him for march blocking, warmachine hunting, mage hunting, and flank charging if need be.
I know itís a lot of points to drop for a skink, and I know a scar veteran would do it better, so please donít comment, ďJust get a scar vet.Ē But I want to throw it in for fun, and the chance to killing blow one of my friendís WoC heroes, itíll happen one day. So any advice or opinions would be appreciated, unless aforementioned opinion is to tell me that chiefs are worthless, and to use a scar veteranÖ.
Ive played with skink chiefs a few times, the only thing I really dont like about them is the T2 and the low LD. But apart from that they are good enough for the purposes you mentioned.
I used a flying one with killing blow and the maiming shield (i think but im not sure though) to kill off some nice dwarf ironbreakers (damn that save!). So I must say they can be useful, just make sure you dont get in base contact with anything that has a ASF rule, because that would kill the chief before he got to the attacking stage.
I would field him in a unit of 3~4 terradons probably, just to give him more survivability, and some companions to do damage with
I'm glad to see someone else appreciates the little green guys, and has had success! I was thinking of putting him in with some terradons like you said, but this is all untested theory on my part. And I whole heartedly agree about ASF, he'll never see the light of day against high elves.
I'm still skeptical that he'll be able to do damage to my Exalted, haha.
We'll see about that!
Remember you need to be US5+ to march block, so a chief on terradon would need to be in a unit of terradons to be able to march block.
My preferred kit with terradons is to give him the Staff of the Lost Sun, and then Enchanted Shield. It's basically a Str5 Shortbow (so 16" range), but with 3x multi shot - which means in a unit with 3 other terradons - you now get 6 shots at 8", 3 at Str3 and 3 at Str5. Plus the 4d3 dropped rocks in the movement phase and you can do some serious damage to one unit.
I rarely trust my terradons in CC as I've never managed to get the rolls - tried charging a necro on a corpse cart the other day and ended up getting the unit wiped (needed 3's to hit the necro... rolled nothing but 1's and 2's, lost one terradon on the return attack... and then fled and landed on another one of his units).
I use my Skink Chief as my general though in sub1000 point games, he's a bit cheaper overall than the scarvet - and fits better with the style of army I field at that point level.
I do have a skink chief for usage in games under 1000 points, but it seems to me that the best option is the Skink Warspear if I have him on a steggie.
Oops forgot about the US 5, but i'll probably run him in some terradons anyway. As far as cc is concerned I'll be throwing him in there for kicks. I'll run him in a stegadon one of these days though, but I only have one and it's my EoTG. I've never used the staff of the lost sun, but it sounds intriguing.
Low leadership? What low leadership? The skink chief has LD7 and is cold-blooded, this means that on average, his leadership is the equivalent to LD9 which is pretty good for a skink .
I'm currently experimenting on the Skink Horde and they're getting pretty deadly, I usually kit my Chief with the Steggie Helm, Spear, Sheild and give him a Terradon, he's mainly there to extend the 'Leadership bubble' to keep the army together as well as to charge light units, lone wizards and warmachine crews wherever he gets the chance.
The trick is with the Terradon-riding chief is to always be on the offensive and charge units that you know that he could beat. If he gets charged or you charge large units of infantry/elite infantry, dice-gods alone could only help him there and you know how fickle they get .
I'm currently writing a Skink Horde tactica as I think they have great potential in the right hands
