I am new to lizards and as I have been reading these forums I see that some people love the warriors with or without shields while others like the skink/krox units. What do you think is the best for 8th.
It's Saurus with Spears, not even close really. Krozigor Skinks are pretty awful and the Parry isn't worth it to a model with a good save and T4. You want more attacks and to laugh at Chaos players who can't have Spears.
Why not skinks? Yeah skinks suck, but steadfast and keeping krox safe seems like it would be good. Any particular reasons or just preference?
You're not always Steadfast, and you lose every single combat. Skinks die like flies and don't hit hard, the Kroxigors can only do so much. Basically you're providing free CR for your opponent, who will murder tons of them or murder enough but will be big and out Steadfast you. Either way, they run a lot.
Im a huge fan of Saurus with HW and shiled. That parry save is amazing. even with a 4+ save and T4. It is always awesome to parry off STR 6 attacks form a charater or a lance.
In 8th you need 3 ranks alive just to get those bonus attacks, I don't like losing attacks early. The extra 1 point per model adds up but it is not a major concern, but you have to pay 1 point per model and then an additional rank of models. Most people run their saurus 6 wide. A player that runs 18 saurus will have to run 24 with spears. The points difference is now 90 points for 6 attacks on the front that you don't get when charging (who doesnt like to charge?). Across multiple units that adds up HUGE. personally I run 0-1 units with spears and that seems to work best for me.

Overall the spearmen work the same as 7th Ed, a good spearmen unit still overall, but expensive. But in 7th Ed you could take 15-18 and watch as enemies bounced off the unit left and right, now you need too take 20-24 for the spare rank, and that builds up over your different units for less points in your other things such as stegos kroxies and salamanders.
The hand weapon saurus however now get a second row of attacks, mind you only 1A each, and trade the +1 armor save for a 6+ parry save, you might not care for it but for every 6 you roll on the ward roll, that's saving you 11 points, not a measly 5-6, maybe 7 like most peoples core choices, and that also builds up over the course of a game.
My final 2 cents on the Spearmen sadly is the rise of war machines and shooting armies more than they were before. Alota the armies that give me trouble are the magic/shooting armies, and those guys are gonna force you too come too them, and they are probably gonna let you change them over visa versa if your bringing spears.
My initial thoughts are that warriors will get destroyed due to the initiative 1 problem. With lores of shadow and death attacking initiative and basically having ASL I'm having a hard time figuring how to use them. I currently have a WE, HE, and Skaven armies, so high initiative is all that I have every used in WFB. I have yet to buy any core for my Lizard army, as i cant figure out which will be best for me.(I already own a Slann and some Temple guard)
I understand that Skinks are very week and that they have a hard time standing up to almost everything, but I was thinking of using big blocks of skinks (44) with kroxigors (4). Having large blocks in conjunction with Lore of life should help them, no?
It also doesn't help that i think the units of skinks with kroxs look a billion times better than the warriors. This makes my decision even more difficult.
Any additional insight into why skink/krox blocks are worse than warriors would be very helpful to me.
Saurus Warriors with hand weapons and shield have an armour save of 4+ and an additional ward save of 6+ against units from the front, moreover they are toughness 4 and strenght 4, meaning they can stand a lot of attacks and they can give a lot of damage.
Skinks have a 6+ armour save and 6+ ward save also only against attacks from the front, but they are only toughness 2 and strenght 3 meaning they die easily and do not return that much damage. The Kroxigors have to do all the damage, I haven't used these before, so I would like someone else to describe these

Kroxigors are amazing, and deal alot of damage but the fact is the enemy will kill more skinks than your kroxigors will return in favor, cheap yes, but the mixed unit is kinda like, eh a glass cannon? Thats the best analogy i can come up with atm lol. Kroxies are better off by themselfs in my experince
Don't look down aopn the saurus jsut because of the short sighted Int and WS, both of those can be fixed with lore of light, and they don't do too shabby without it either. Just keep your units 2 or 3 ranks at most and you should do fine, maybe 4 in larger games, No Saurus hordes!! just costs too much
