Haven't played against dwarves since I have picked up warhammer, and let me say that I amnervous. My opponenet is likely to take a cannon, grudge thrower, and bolt thrower + maybe 1 more warmachine. 2-3 units of greatweapon dwarves , and i am expecting 2 runepriests, master rune of balance, the +1 to dispell banner (he has a special campaign rule that makes this +2 actually) and a couple runes of spellbreaking for antimagic. There will also be thunderers.
is a Slann worth it here? i was thinking I could take lore of heavens and a power scroll to take advantage of his clustered deployment but I wouldnt be surprised if I only ever get spells off during my power scroll magic phase.
Besides any heros/lords I will likely only be taking chameleons, saurus and lots of salamanders.
How would you combat the armies of the stalwart dwarves?
You could drop rocks on their heads and charge from the rear. Shooting them with many skink units from just outside their average charge range works too.
This will make using multiples a helluvalot harder as you will be shooting from long range ( and moving ) all the time at least 10" away. The best way is to get up close but stay out of their charge arc. If he has a master rune of grungni on a unit banner ( which every smart dwarf player should have in his army. Best rune ever ) he'll be getting a 5+ wardsave for a substantial part of his army against shooting attacks ( also against the salamanders ). Unless you know your opponent's armybuild better you can't really anticipate, but it will dampen your shooting impact substantially.Shooting them with many skink units from just outside their average charge range works too.
Dwarfs are currently quite a tough matchup for lizzies, stegadons usually don't get far.
Btw, if he has an anti dispelling BANNER, that banner normally grants +2 to dispell. There's also a talisman granting +1.
I think I'll just forgo the slann...I know, it's blasphemy but an old blood with 8 attacks, scar vet with banner and 4 units of 24 saurus sounds like it might get me somewhere. and no, I dont think he uses the banner of 5+ ward save. Atleast i have never heard of him doing it. Gotta track down my dwarf army book today I think.
Oh also, I take the chameleon skinks with their BS4 so they can move, shoot at long range, double fire and still hit on 6's for that sweet sweet poison.
I indeed think that chameleons would fair good against dwarves... just to take down a cannon or grudgethrower!
Think about a faster army than just the m4 of average saurus. Maybe get some Cold ones, with the sun standard of chotec. And charge them as soon as possible into a unit thunderers or something alike, just to keep them from shooting up anything to valueable. Then take the oldblood (preferably on carnosaur) and use him to charge another unit...
And when all the dwarves are being carved up by the fast movers use that time to get the saurus warriors across the table.
I stand by my tactics, something will get shot to bits on turn 1, why not terradons after they drop their rocks?
The point of having skinks just out of average charge range is to try to bait the stunties out. If they do, stand and shoot, then either move or shoot close range if they miss the charge, if they make the charge, lose, and they are closer to your saurus fighters. If the stunties don't charge, you have a couple 70 point static units blasting them for the rest of the game with poison multi shots or you can manoever them towards other juicy targets as needed. Multiple shots are just a luxurious bonus.
Chameleons are also very good, and a carnosaur I'd only use if he's decked to the teeth in defensive gear.
