Welcome to Librarium Online!
Playing in a campaign and have 2500pts to go up against him. He has a black coach and reguarly fields hordes of units with lots of vampires. I was looking for advice and ideas on how to beat this monster.
I was thinking about:
Camo Skinks to deal with The Black Coach from Turn 1 (poison wounds)
Salamanders to deal with massed infrantry
Then I am drawing a blank, this is what i have access to and opinions and ideas would be useful:
20 Temple Guard
2 Skink Priests
2 Skink Chiefs
1 Scar Vet/Old Blood on foot
1 hero on cold one
16 cold one cav (2 full command)
56 Saurus Warriors (2 full command)
30 skinks with blowpipes
10 skinks with Jav/shield
3 Sallie Packs
1 Stegadon (nothing fixed to top so can use as whatever)
I was considering get a second slann mage priest and running one outside of a bunker as ethereal with cupped hands...and try and jsut miscast on to his general with cupped hands
Other than that am really struggling...i have a small budget that I could get some more stuff with if required...but it circa £50...So ideas and opinions please...needs to be quick to paint as welll as if not painted i lose 250pts. Everything there except the Steg, Kroxi and 1 of da sallies aint painted..

Well, as a VC player, here's some ideas & suggestions;
a) bring flaming attacks. Lots of burny goodness! Our only solid infantry unit is a 30-40 man gravestar including the barrows banner (+1 to-hit for all wights) + Wight King BSB w/drackenhof banner for the regen.
Banner of eternal flame on a unit of temple guard, plus throwing a cheap oldblood/scar vet with the burning blade of chotec into a large saurus unit will give the VC player very little manouvering room for his deathstar... Support the other flank with some sallies and he's pooched!
b) learn what spells to watch out for; Vanhel's Danse is his biggest threat. Re-rolls + ASF for units already in combat. Or else an 8" move which can be used to charge.
Summon Undead Horde is killer - especially if he's running it on a thrall w/summon ghouls/LotD as that will add +3D6 models to an exisiting unit!
If he's taking light magic, stop speed of light and timewarp - especially if it's targeted at his grave guard!!!
Let him cast invcation all he wants... He'll flub his roll eventually, and 1D6 per casting added bodies is nothing to worry about.
c) don't be a dick! VC's have taken more than their fair share of kicks to the nutts since 8th came out... Don't go pulling the same old power scroll + purple sun/final trans/dwellers crap please! You've already got him licked on magic with a high powered slaan - especially if you go for the good old becalming cogitation reutine like all lizzies seem to run.
Hope this helps,
1 ) Make sure you have a vet with a magic weapon/venom of the firefly frog to go after his BC. It gets to ethereal really fast now. Being in a cold one unit would be helpful.
2 ) Slann in temple guard is good. As mentioned, use the banner of eternal flame.
3 ) Use up all your warriors.
4 ) Salamanders are great.
5 ) A priest with a scroll and maybe another with the cube of darkness.
6 ) Fill with skinks.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Thanks everyone for the advice on how to beat him, would it be worth taking two slann? I can get the extra model if i need it...was thinking that one could be lore of life in the bunker as BSB with temple Guard...then have an ethereal one with cupped hands and just target the vamps with it and throw as many dice as i can to miscast and chuck on the general..
Or is that a bit too dosh baggy, as am debating these different things atm.
Thanks in advance
- grave guard
- black knights
- spirit hosts
- hitty unit w/cheapo banner of hellfire
We have no problems at all dealing with ethereal stuff!
And I honestly wouldn't aim for a 1st/2nd turn 6-dice IF, take my miscast mr.vamp general, since it could easily end the game within minutes...
Besides, being a git isn't proving your a better general, only that you obviously care more about winning than being a good sport!
Use solid tactics, take into account the rest of the advice here, (espeically about bringing a unit or two with burny goodness!) and you should have a seriously good shot at coming out top! Plus both you guys will likely have more fun too!
VC's are craptastically bad right now - on the level of brets & tree-hugging elves!
Now if the VC player pulls out all the stops and goes for the ghoul spam rush & dickenhoff guard, then by all means, play a more tournament-focused list! (and you'll smoke him good with competitive lizzies too! )
well i am not sure on this but if the zombies are like TK skeletons use 10 cold one riders and they can stay in the fight for ever and never die while you killing some of them (takeing more damage from combat res) btw wood elf are not bad you just have to know how to play them know a guy that can
Hey all, the game is a goer and have until monday to make my list. He is definatly taking competitive vampires for our campaign game, our friendly game on the following thursday will be brokeny lists.
From my undertanding competitive vamps is ghouls, lots of vamps and a black coach or two. I think against me being lizzies would be silly not to take it. He also has things like spirit hosts and lots of grave guard.
I am thinking at the moment something along these lines:
Cupped Hands, Banner for within 18" and LOS wizards take stupidty tests
Disciplines: Mystery, Rumination, Mystery
20models, flaming banner and temple guard champ with burning blade (extra-2 to save)
2 blocks of 20 warriors (5x4) with Full Command
2 x 12 man Skink Skirmishers
10man - solely for the coach
2 x Salamander Hunting Packs (4handlers each)
Skink Priest - For Channeling
Dispel Scroll and Fly
Pirhana Blade(double wounds), Cold one and 6+ Ward
Cold One Cav
9models - +1 combat res banner
Aim is for cav and camos to chase the black coach whilst rest of army marches forward to take on hordes of vamps. Getting in close enough to get him taking stupidity tests all the time (magic and cc) to hopefully make his vamps less powerful...also going for lots of flaming to try and stop his regen on his massive grave guard unit.
Only decision that am mulling over atm is which lore to take...or to take two slanns...I need to win this game to stop him expanding into my territories, we have both agreed to take competitive lists so want to make sure it is the most efficent i can make it so need advice.
sword of anti-heroes + other trickster's shard! A basic gravestar runs at least 2, sometimes 3 characters in it, that means a possible S8/A7 hero to go butcher that BSB! Or he could be capable of taking down a fighty lord who will be almost bereft of any ward save...
or if you take a second slann, you could steed of shadows this scar vet into the VC bunker where the general will almost always be hiding out... Now he has to think; his bunker is very likely heavily outclassed by this guy, and his general wants no part of this fight! (it will also negate the WS hat too!)
Sure your scar vet will die in the end, but it could very well be worth it as a cleaver & sneaky way to get to his general and spook him good!
Perhaps take the idea one step further; instead of a second slann, why not an old blood with sword of anti-heroes, charm of the jaguar warrior, talisman of preservation?! He could quite easily survive a round or two against a non-fighty vamp lord, and will butcher him in return!
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Just thought would let everyone know, that I didnt win unfortunatly.....3 massive units of 50ghouls a piece (each with two vamps) and a gravestar unit with 35models, lord, wight bsb, regen barrier and some other weird banner.
Was a close game and only thing that screwed me over really was a purple sun at my temple guard that i couldnt dispell unforunatly
other than that it was a really close game (oh and i forgot the wizard ignore 6s rule) so my bad really.
Got a rematch against him in two weeks, so need new ideas for ways to kill ghouls, fricking masses of them....salamanders were targeted first so couldnt flame em...
It's a nasty combo - especially if the unit is supported by say a 'helm of commandment' vamp (gives WS to 1 unit provided the wear and/or his unit is NOT in combat!) Or else has a healthy application of a spell that boosts WS...
Thus, such a unit will hit on 2's, and likely wound most things on 2's due to their S6!
Or else, use shadow magic as it has alot of nice hexes that are also 'remains in play' so they can also help to mitigate the VC magic phase!
For example, use mystifying miasma to drop his initiative, then perhaps try for a pit on that ghoul unit... end off with a nasty little trap of 'the withering' to negate the ghouls T4! (now your units can have fun mulching possible T1 troops!)
Also, be sure to concentrate entirely on eliminating 1 unit at a time. he can't bring back models once a unit is wiped out, and with only 4-5 units, you should be able to out-manouver him.
You could always try for a pair of slaans? One w/loremaster (fire) + focused rumination and the other w/loremaster (shadow) + focused rumination + becalming.
Hit a ghouls unit with the -T from shadows, then slap 'em in the face with fulminating flame cage to trap 'em in place...
If you pull it off, the VC player will be confronted with leaving his unit stuck in place for a whole turn, or else suffer S4 hits to the entire unit, which might be only T1 or T2!!!
In the meantime, this gives you time to set-up ideal flank charges. (as even if the VC player tries to reform his ghouls, he'll take the hits from the flame cage!)
Also, as he's spaming characters, it might be worth your while to include a saurus hero with the sword of anti-heroes... At the very least he's adding +2S/+2A and can then go about butchering rank&files or else poking thralls!
Hope this helps,
