A few friends of mine have just started playing Warhammer, and the Beastman player is having a terrible time of it so is thinking of switching to Lizardmen - I thought I'd best make sure you guys also haven't been nerfed out of the park else I can see him giving up on WFB altogether!
The other three of us are High Elves, Dark Elves and Daemons. What would you recommend to try out first? (we've no problem with him using proxies)
Why not go for the elf trifecta? High elves, dark elves and wood elves?
the guy didn't want Beastmen cause they arn't that good, so why take one of the lower tier armies again? xP
Lizardmen are top tier atm. Right up there with Skaven and WoC because they have good casters, rock hard core and tough heroes. He being Lizardmen will give you, both HE and DE, a real hard time. Making for good, tough matches
Tell him to stock up on Salamanders...every elf player hates their guts for obvious reasons ;D
I'd go WoC
I like fighting up from the bottom, hence my wood elves comment.
I forgot that some people get discouraged by consistent failures, lol
Lizardmen are one of the tops armies in my opinion. They certainly have not been nerfed by 8th edition. I thought they might because of initiative but it hasn't hurt them at all. Instead they have:
Really powerful magic that just keeps giving, very strong cheap scar veterans, excellent core troops, amazing scouts, and beautiful beautiful salamanders. Hell, this guy could probably convert a couple from any spare beasts he has lying around...
In my opinion, lizardmen are the most reliable army in warhammer. Cold blooded keeps your troops doing as you order, the slann has excellent tools to protect itself from miscasts and protect your own troops from enemy magic, your core troops pump out plenty of decent attacks, you are not relying on over the top war machines or spells, you just keep your army fighting together and supporting itself an it tends to fight for you...
As it is, im not surprised this guy has struggled with Beastmen against 3 generally strong armies...
The problems he has with beasts are:
1) poor Ld, meaning he runs away a lot (lost a 400pt unwounded lord last night due to bad rolls)
2) no armour
3) ineffective ranged
WoC was another of his choices, but he plays CSM in 40k so I think he wanted something a bit different. He's also not the greatest player (gets carried away and forgets to do stuff - in 40k I've seen him move one unit and go straight to assault as he was so keep to get them into combat he didn't move anything else and skipped his whole shooting phase!) so if lizzies are that good we might have ourselves some nice close matches
well Besides the Stegadons are leadership is pretty good,
Armor we have Scaly Skin
Range, well we have camo skinks/ reg skinks/ Salamanders that all can tear a unit apart if used properly.
For all the above meantioned reasons, if he wants a powerhouse army... go Lizardmen.
Salamanders and Slann are a very nasty combination, especially when combined with a block of 30 tempel guard. He wont run, has high AS and pretty strong magic!
The big downside of LM is that they are that strong. I play both WE and LM. And I like a game with my WE as well since there is more strategy involved when playing with WE. Cause everything that can go wrong will, and there is no way to repair it. Lizardmen... well if something goes wrong you just smash it in with a block of Saurus Warriors or you burn it with the Sally's...
Again, for a starting player... go LM!
8th really hasn't changed a lot for us, slightly changed the effectiveness of warrior blocks, but for the points they are damn solid. consider running with hand weapons opposed to shields from now on.
LD problems? hah. I really doubt you'll have a unit of L8 cold blooded troops run within 3 games even.
We come with heavy Armour standard, given the cold-blooded special rule. this runs quite a few benefits for our saurus old ones especially due to their improved save.
Ranged....hmm. we have skinks, and salamanders. and stegadons if you will. skinks are amazing for their cost, whittling down and baiting is their main role, however don't be scared to stand and shoot for some more accuracy, you wont be dissapointed with the rolls. salamanders, wewwweeee. I love these guys, great against heavily armored troops and cavalry alike.
Magic. magic magic magic, arguably one of the best casters in the game, a Slann is usually more than enough to cover your needs in this area, so many possibilities for his role aswell. ethereal? check. any lore? check. make your enemys caster discard 6's to roll in the magic phase? check. *mate*
while I will say saurus are quite static and often disappoint me, thats just me. they do their job fine.
but yes, definitely play a few proxy games. it's a fun army, but not for everyone.
