Basically I'm looking to swap out my Dark Elves for some lizzies but quite frankly i'm not sure what i need i don't have the book yet however i have read up quite a bit on them so would like to know where i should start for a 2K list
Well first off, welcome to the lizardmen! You picked a well balanced race for 8th edition, although dark elves aren't in anyway not well off themselves-_- But enough about my petty quarrels.
I would say lizardmen have one of if not the best wizard in the game in the slann, so the first thing you'll want to do is take a slann for your list. Now they can be pretty pricey depending on how you want to set him up, generally most people go with life, but there are tons of other viable lores for a slann. In my 3k lists where I like to run 2 of these bad boys, I take one with life and bunker him in some temple guard, and the other with shadow magic, and have him running around by himself causing havoc.
I don't know whether or not your going for a competitive list, a fun list, or something in between, but some common units you'll want to take are:
-Slann: One of the best casters in the game, can be your general AND your BSB.
-Saurus Scar veteran: Great stat line, ton's of different weapon load outs for them, great in challenges for the most part.
-Skink priest: Always has to take heavens magic, but they have access to taking an ancient stegadon with engine of the gods, read up on this thing if you haven't it's pretty darn good.
-Saurus warriors: one of the best core units in the game IMO, great to use with a life slann, because they never really die!
-chameleon skinks: they have the scouts special rule and 2 poison attacks each, which makes a unit of 5 or 2 units of 5 of these guys very dangerous and great for war machine hunting.
-Temple guard: not everybody likes to take these guys, but personally I think they're a fantastic hammer unit for lizardmen, they have halberds and a decent stat line. They're also stubborn while the slann is inside.
-Stegadon/ancient stegadon: Like the temple guard they aren't overly popular, well because they stand out like a sore thumb, and you know your opponent is just itching to throw a few cannons at it. My suggestion if you do decide to take a stegadon, make it an ancient stegadon with the engine of the gods. Great support unit for any lizardmen army.
-Salamander's/razordon's: Personally I go with salamanders over razordons any day of the week, but they both have there uses. I could go on for hours about how amazing salamanders are...literally hours..I have a few stories to go along with it, but when making a list try to include either of these.
Ultimately the decision is your's and there's tons of other options in the army book, some but not a lot of the named characters are pretty good. Definitely read into it some more, good luck, hope I helped a bit
that was a lot more help than i expected!! And atm I Play ogres, Daemons and darkelves are back up armies that i have no love for XD
what about skinks in general should i be taking these?
I'm not a fan of the skink cohorts myself, If you wanted to try them out go right ahead you may find you like them. Skink skirmishers aren't bad unit's at all, they're relatively cheap..I think 75pts for a unit of 10, which is pretty decent, they have BS3 and 2x poison attacks and are pretty good at covering your flanks. What you'll want to use them for mostly, is shooting at big bad monsters, the poison can be really handy as it will ignore there relatively high toughness.
Ahwell the only big bad monsters that get played here are quite frankly.....Mine XD
haha, they're pretty handy to have around, I run a unit of 10 in my 2.5k list and 2 units of 5 chameleon skinks for hunting warmachines. I can't tell you darn handy they can be to have around, especially against my friends ogres, he hates the very site of those tiny skinks with there blowpipes
aha but my favorite is going up against my friends TK's I just park them right in front of his casket of souls, and watch it die by the second and sometimes first turn, it's quite hilarious
think off the top if my head in our little group thing i'll probally only ever play against brets woodies(my mates apprently starting these) Warriors dark elves(not mine) High elves dwarves and another set of woodies
