Well, With teh sarus.... with there low Inititive, the spears may seem like a better option.....but..... Is teh cacrifise of armour worth it?
tnks in advance
That depends on their role and the points you've got.
Is their role an anchor around which a mobile army manoeuvers, spears are better.
But if they have an offensive role, being the shock-arm themselves, I'd say handweapons. No matter how low your I and how high the enemy's, if you charge you generaly strike first.
And if you expect to charge, instead of being charged, you're not using the second rank anyway. It would save 2p a model.
And if you think their save's too low, you can always take the spawning of Quetzl.
I actually believe the opposite of what Araith just said. Sauruses with spears are much better for offense since they get more attacks, and therefore have a higher chance of breaking their enemies. Sauruses with hand weapons will live longer, but Sauruses with spears will do more damage, so use spears for offensive purposes and hand weapons for defensive.
also, why would initiative play a part in which weapon they choose? Spears don't make you always attack first in WFB, only in mordheim.
I really am great, aren't I?
That's not what I meant.
You only use the second rank of spears if you're charged. When you charge, you only use the first rank. (Unless you're HE spearmen, but that's another story)
So if you expect to charge (i.e. offensive purpose) you have no use for the second rank of spears. So it saves 2 points pp and you get +1 Sv if you just take handweapons.
And if you want extra attacks on the charge, you can take spawning of sotek. It even saves 2 points in a unit of 16, 10 points in units of 20.
On the defense on the other hand, you will use the second rank of spear. Because you expect to get charged. And as I said, you can use spawning of Quetzl for extra save.
You see my point?
I love those spawnings.
In my opinion spears are the better option but not the most economical. In a 1000pt army never take spears as every point is valuable. however in a 2k plus army is suggest taking them.
If you only use 1 unit in 2k, it'll probably be an anchor. Then definitly take the spears.
But if you focus on the saurus, don't equip them all with spears. It could cost more then 2 kroxies. Or more then 20 skinks. One, maybe 2 units with spears should be enough, if you've got 4 units.
spears can be useful in the offense if you want to keep up pressure on an opponents anchor unit, because in the 2nd and ongoing rounds of combat you will get the 2nd rank of attacks. coupling this with mark of sotek is great as it gives you the extra attack on the charge which you'll get the next turn because of the spears

Go with hand weopeons for the extra attack because spears only give you 1 attack cause of there predatory fighter rule.
