Welcome to Librarium Online!
So when I started out with the most recent iteration of lizardmen I played 2000 point games and just ALWAYS took a second generation slann, or, on rare occasions, a 3rd. It occured to me when I finally got army builder that the slann, his items and the two skink priests he used to frapp enemies who hid from him took up slightly more than half of my points. Aside from that I generally sported 2 or 3 units of 25 skinks, 3 salamanders (1 unit of 3) and as many sauruses with hand weapons as I could get, occasionally popping a spawning of quetzl on the unit of 12 (the others would be 16 or 20 depending on the number of skinks) so they could more effectively protect the mighty h'mnmshpht, 2nd generation slann of awesomeitude.
So after about 3 seconds actually thinking about the numbers breakdown I abandoned that particular army setup and began taking 5th or occasionally 4th generation slanns.
But I miss h'mnmshpht so!
My question is this, when (at what game point value) do you all think it's appropriate to take slann of that generation, if ever? For that matter, do you think they unbalance a game of 2000 points?
Fluffwise I always thought of my army as the personal guard of the slann in question, rather than an army meant to go out and conquer, per-se.
We supply the violence.
I saw the topic and my mind immediately conjured an image of a frog in a pimp's fur coat, complete with pimp-cane and bling-bling...
*Ahem* Anyway, funny you should mention that, I was talking about this with a friend of mine who plays Lizardmen. We agreed that 3k pts or more would be the best point at which to add a slann, as the points drain would still be great but you can also field a versatile list to support the slann with too at the points value.
The iron crowned is getting closer,
Swings his hammer down on him,
Like a thunderstorm he's crushing,
Down the Noldor's proudest king.
Under my foot, so hopeless it seems.
You've troubled my day, now feel the pain.

I'll take Xowpatl the Magnificent in lower point armies, but I would design them to have few troops - Slanna are expensive so the army should base its tactics around the slann, especially when taking 2nd or 3rd generation ones
