I'm new to lizardmen, and fantasy in general... one of my reasons for wanting to start is the carnosaur model... it just looks too cool.

My question is, are they any good? As far as I can tell, its a lot of points for very little return. I've been told that they are very limited in their usefulness... what are your experiences with them? Should I stick to using them as supercyboars for my 40k ork warbosses? Or do they deserve a place in a lizardman army?

IMHO, depends on how you use it.
It's a really cool model, worth its weight in gold....err...points, for fluff alone. It's a real beast in CC, tearing away at the enemy with a combined 10 attacks( with Oldblood and frenzy) at an insane strength. The trick is to get it into combat as soon as possible. Pretty hard to figure out huh?
A wise opponent is sure to start bombarding you with arrows on round 1, hoping to hit the mount( your carnosaur) in order to remove the Terrorcausing part of your unit. Also, in CC the enemy will probably opt to direct his/her attacks on the carnosaur insted of your hero for the same reason. There's not much to do about that, nothing but Large targets and terrain is going to shield you from missiles. Only the hero can have its AS and ward save improved, the carnosaur is stuck at base saves. hmm...just imagine a carnie with barding....maybe scythes as well? Yikes!
At T5 and W5 you can take a round or two of moderate fire anyways. Just don't stand still or your toast.
I'm sure there's a bunch of essays on the forum to explain the different uses for the carnie. If you can't find any(and would like the advice from a newbie) I could try to give you some direction.

    Baseline:
It's fluffy. It's really scary in the eyes of the opposing player. Still, it's got frenzy and can be distracted and gunned down. Bolt throwers and cannons are a real threat to your dear lizard. It's not worth it's points(some 400-500 fully equipped) for its stats alone. Almost but not quite. Especially the mandatory Oldblood on top makes it for a fluffier choice, a scar-vet. is almost as tough. And a lot cheaper. If you could field the carnosaur by itself as a rare monster choice for the base 210 points....still a 30 or so points too much IMO.
Try it, you'll love it. Then you'll get older and wiser....I guess.

Try playing Great Lizards. Of course, they won't be tournament legal, but you can have Carnosaurs as a Special choice. Who'd want to face four Carnosaurs in a 2000-pt game?
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
    Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
    Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD

They are powerful, but what i say a lot, getting one is putting a lot of stones into one basket. For a similar prive of oldblood on carnie, i would get the special hero Kroq-gar. But then you would have to get a cavalry army.
