lets agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours are
That depends on your strategy and on your opponent. They aren't cheap, so think well before taking them. It's a question of balance.
In general it isn't advisable to give all of them a spawning. Though in my Huanchi list they do. http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ad.php?t=35233
And all spawnings have their uses.
Quetzl is good for spear Saurus and for big anchor blocks.
Tlazcotl when you face Undead.
Huanchi if you focus on charging fast. Or when you play WE.
Sotek is good if you know you can charge, i.e. if you fight dwarves etc. And it's good on characters.
Tzunki is cheap and generally usefull.
Chotec is very nice of cavalry.
Tepok if you focus on magic a lot.
This is just general advise. Much more uses then these can be imagined.
It actually seems like a waste of points. Sotek adds +1 attack on the charge. HURRAY! Think about it though, 4 or 5 more attacks from the saurus may kill like 1, maybe two at the max more guys then they would other wise. Sounds good, eh? Well the spawning costs 30 points and 1 or 2 guys aren't going to be worth it. Plus it makes them a special or a rare, which those slots could be better used by an actual rare or special choice. Quetzl seems like the only one I would think about taking, or maybe the one with +1 dispel dice or the immune to psychology if you were facing an enemy that had lot of fear causing stuff (undead armies) or the bonus to dispel dice for a magic heavy army.
Well, you could build a saurus army, in that case you're not gonna fill all the special and rare slots. So you can take spawnings.
They work good on characters.
An extra S4 attack on the charge is good. People will fear you, which only works in your favour.
Tzunki is so ****ing cheap. And an extra I could be useful. Though I admit, together with the spawning of Chotec it's the one I see the least of all.
They have their uses. And for costs. Well, look at the Marks in Chaos armies. Look at the runes of the Dwarves. They aren't cheap either.
Finally, a theme like a Sacred Host just looks good. Gives your army a strong fluff.
Like I said, an extra attack on the charge sounds good, but 4 or 5 extra attacks isn't going to kill 30 points worth of enemies, unless there is any t2 no armour save core troops that cost 15 pts each that I don't know about it.
1. If you use that regiment well, you can kill 30 points of units extra.
2. You can also give it to heroes. An extra S7 attack on the charge will do good.
3. Not everything is about winning points back. A big unit of Sotek Saurus will certainly frighten the enemy, making him act in a way he wouldn't have done otherwise. That's only an example. For more ideas, read some tactica.
Your right on one thing, having an extra attack on the charge might scare a inexperienced player to go WAY far out of the way to avoid it when its not that dangerous. However, decent to experienced players can think (even if very basic at times) statistically and realize they need not worry much about it. You are better off with quetzl if you are going to use anything. No need to suggest looking a tactica, what a good insult there...
It really depends on your stratagy. Lizardmen cost a lot of points, so it is always a good idea to save on points wherever you can, but most of the spawnings would work well if you tailored your list juuust right.
Ariath- I love your idea of the Huanchi army. I myself have been planning on converting my army to a sacred host of Huanchi; I have always been a firm believer that I1 doesn't mean saurus must sit and take charges, in fact, in my games against a bretonian regular of mine my saurus tend to charge his cavalry more than they get charged by them, mainly by using skinks. By the by, do you use a special color sceme for Huanchi? I tried painting a trial saurus in dark colors, but they just seem to look much better in bright colors...
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely...
but it rocks absolutely, too!
