I'm planning out purchases to bump my army over the 1500pts it's at right now, and I've decided that a pair of Skink priests isn't nearly enough magic to keep me happy - I need a Slann!
So tell me how to use a Slann properly:
-At what points level does a Slann (+ Temple Guard, maybe) become viable?
-What generation is best (concerning cost vs efffectiveness), and why?
-What lore(s), and what spells should I hope for in those lores?
-What items, plaques, etc?
-Temple Guard, yay or nay. And if yay, then how does one use them in conjunction with a Slann?
I'll post my own proposed ideas later, but I want to get pure unadulterated feedback first!

1. A 2000 pt slann is certainly viable, but you probably shouldn't have a high gen slann or a bodyguard bigger than 12
2. Usually, I would either take the 4th or the 2nd generation. Its good not to take the chance your slann will blow up in your face, and 3rd generation isn't too helpful for the cost.
3. Depends on the opponent, yuor army, and the terrain. Usually I like taking the lore of life for one spell because usually I'll be able to use it. Also, I usually take a magic missile so you can always do something in the magic phase.
4. BSB is always good. I love diadiem of power, it makes your magic phase so flexible and is realitivly cheap. Other than that, that depends on what types of armies you play against.
5. I don't like temple guard, as you can keep a lone slann out of combat pretty easily. If your opponent's army does threaten the Slann, just stick it with some saurus. ou don't need to be subborn when you still rerollable, coldblooded ld 9.
what i tend to do with my slann is all or nothing. i eitehr get the basic slann 4th generation or i go all out 2nd generation with some skink priests. i would recomend takign a few skinkers for scroll caddies jsut cuz. as for temple gaurd i never realyl found them to be entriley useful. they are expensive saurus, and practically useless cuz you do not want to be going into combat with your slann. sure they are good defenders but like nbp said....if you realyl need protection jsut stick them in a unit of saurus, they only slightly worse and wont be such a point hog for a unit thats goann wind up spending the entire game sitting around.
...and you do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around, thats what its all about.
Also thought they might be stubborn, they still break to fear causing units! saurs make a great bodyguard, no arguing with that.
a 4th gen is all you need, a 2nd gen is the bigest point sink a magic user can become at 2000 (asides for a tzeench lord on a chaos dragon ^_^ )
I use a 4th generation Slann with a 16 man body guard with the blessed spawning of Tlzatocal (or whatever) which makes the saurus immune to psychology . 4th generation is good cause it allows your slann to cast potent magicks with out blowing himself up. Items... hmm Diadem of Power is definetely worth it. It lets you focus your magical power all on one magic phase and fry your opponents.
Since the heavens is now revised, it made the slann a bit less powerful, but powerful nonetheless. I used to cast bolt after another and sizzle my opponents. I would take some fire and maybe 1 light for healing. Heavens is still good, but the -1 strength on comets is seriously NOT good. I sometimes take shadows too for steed.
The revised lores are on the Gamesworkshop website
My thoughts on Lores were 2 Heavens, 1 Fire, and 1 Shadows: For Heavens, I'd like just about any of them. For Fire, I'd hope for Conflagration, but just about any of them (excluding the flaming sword one, but I can demote it in that situation) could be handy. For Shadows, I'd hope for Unseen Lurker - if not, I'd demote to Shadow Steed.
A block of 16 Quetzl/Tlazcoatl Sarus seems like a good buy, since it's still cheaper than 16 Temple Guard and will last longer.
I'm thinking Divine Plaque of Protection & Diadem of Power for gear, and no BSB (not really necessary for a Cold-Blooded army of Ld.
Trust me, cold blooded doesn't save you from much in the right hands. The rerolls on all leadership tests within 12" on a 9 with three dice! For 25 pts! Take it man. Also, i wouldn't advise on mixing and matching the lores as 'hoping' for specific spells from the lores isn't a very reliable strategy.
Well, with the Lore of Fire you can't go wrong if you search for sth to do damage. And the default spell is as good as any.
Myself I also favour the Lore of Death.
Further I agree with the rest. 4th Generation Slann in 2k is enough. A bodyguard of 16 Saurus with Tlazcotl or if you like the Temple Guard, a unit of 12 should be sufficient. Though I must agree the ordinary Saurus are more effective.
Diadem of Power and BSB are very good. The Plague of Tepok is cheap and, against low-magic opponents it works well in combo witht the Diadem of Power. Well, an extra spell is always nice. If you've got points left, consider the Blood Statulette of Spite. Bound spells rock.
