Indeed. I have decided to go with Kroq Gar's Army as my first 2k point army. I wanted this because everybody always goes Slann. In my 3k point army, I will include a Slann also. Kro Gar's rules are by far sexy. Field Calvery as core units, but always the general of the army. Blah blah, I will finish this post later.
Hey it's good that your not going straight for a Slann, but why use a special character? This guy is about a quarter of your army's pts, you would be better off with a Oldblood. Yeah ok he's powerful but he's also very expensive. I wouldn't include him unless the game was at least 3000pts or more, he's just too expensive. But I suppose it's up to you.
hes including him so he can take saurus calavalry as core, and warriors as special
A Promise to a dead man means nothing.
I know why he's doing it but, to include a special character tends to spoil the game. Special characters are there to add flavour and change (every so often) but having one in every game just seems a bit much, then again it's up to him.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with special characters. But don't throw a bunch of crap into it and assume the special character will cover for you. Definitely take a Skink Priest. And a stegadon. And make sure you have a way to stop your saurus cavalry from getting slaughtered by shooters. Skinks, perhaps?
More firm advice will come once I finish up my Kroq-Gar list.
You just can't deal with my infinite nature, can you?
Just to tell you, cavalry Lizardmen lists just dont work. You have 35 point models with only a 3+ save. Without support or other targets, the enemy will decimate them easily. Kroq-Gar himself isnt even that good. His weapon is pretty sucky all considering(wow,a spear. And you have to take a unmodified LD test) he only has a 5+ wardsave and no other wargear to speak of really(hand of gods? Tell me a situation where your 8" away from an enemy unit and not charing). Using a regular army, you can take an oldblood on carnasaur and 2 special choices of cold one riders. Its the same thing, only your oldblood will actually probably do better in combat. And anything over 2 saurus cavalry units in 2k is just a pointsink thats never going to accomplish enough to justify it.
Well, the ones that knows me from the chat knows that I am the greatest anti special charchter person around, so I got to say it's worthless.
And, who says that you have to have a Slann when not fielding Kroq Gar, for me, no Slann untill 3000 points +.
If you don't want to use a Slann and believe me you don't want Kroq Gar (I always think of my armys that they have to be tournament legal even though I probably never will use them in one), another point is the points cost. He will use more than a quater of your available points. And if you look under the Slann entry there's something called a Saurus Oldblood, look at those stats, its a great charachter, it has the same or even better hitting power as some special charachters if they are given the right equipment.
Hmm, I can think of a fast army with alot of without even using a certain charachter.
Lets see, put an Oldblood on a nice Cold One, sure, you need the 4 core that wont be cold ones now, but it will work anyway, cause you can get about the same ammount of them.
Add some other heros, probably a priest or two.
For the core, get one or two small regiments of Saurus, fill up the rest of that you need with skinks (don't be afraid, they are better than what their stat line says).
Now, special, put down your cavarly, but not more than three regiments, use the last slot for a unit of Terradons.
If you got any points over, though I doubt it get a unit of Salamander or a Steggadon, both will get you some more range and a strength in close combat.
I think that's about all.
