I am getting ready to attempt to field a successful southlands army. I really want to include two units of skink horned one riders. I don't want to just go out and buy the old Ti-Chihuci's Raiders (spelling???). I would like to convert some regular skinks, maybe put them on something else. Any suggestions.
Also any advice on the southlands army list. Should I look at the red hoards army list? (Not to excited about that).
Southlands is all about smoke and mirrors. Constantly rotate small units of skinks with blowpipes out of charge arcs, bring a few units of kroxigors for hard hitting through the skinks. A stegadon is always an excellent choice as well as salamanders. Many people argue to take a unit of saurus for some staying power, but A) that is incredibly unfluffy, but it's up to you, one unit of saurus is just going to get outmanouvered. C) you can go without them with enough krox and dinos. Terradons are useful as well in the same mage/war machine hunting role they are usually good at. A strong magic element can be fun and effective to field in Southlands, and if you decide to take a slann, i'll give you one guess as to where that saurus unit needs to go, and that is a reason to take one, as a bodyguard. 4th generation is the best genreration for slann anyway, so no worries that you can't upgrade him further. So, LOTS of skinks, some krox, a stegadon or salamanders (or both depending on the point level), some terradons and some magic. You've got a competitive army that is incredibly fun to play because of lots of dinos, poisoned attacks and magic. As for the horned ones, I've never used them, and in my humble opinion they aren't worth it but if you like them, go for it. As for modeling ideas, I'm really not sure, I'm sure some people who are far more creative than I will be able to help you. Good Luck!
On a quick note, you can't have saurus units if you are running a slann in a Southlands army unless you are playing 3k points or more. You can only have as many saurus units in your army as you have scar veterans.
hmm, i was playing with the idea not so long ago, i ended up with 4 units of 20 skinks, lots of cheap (but effective) skink characters, two units of horned riders and nearly maxed out on loads of krox, terradons, steggie and sallies, pretty fun to see your opponents face when you field about a hundred skink models, let alone being humiliated (spelling!) by being beaten by the weakest single models in the game lol.
as for conversion ideas u could use the multiple types of cold ones but those could be too large for the skinks, alternative this that u could find some suitable toy dino's and mount plastic skinks on them with a bit of green stuff (and a lot of imagination), give it a try,
and, it'll be cheaper than buying the mini's(expensive :'()
when you've finished with them can u post a pic of them they sound good...
