Welcome to Librarium Online!
This is a pretty simple question that I hope someone out there can answer.
How expensive are lizardmen $$$-wise?
I've started Imperial Guard in 40k and as everyone knows they're pretty damn expensive so I'm looking for a fantasy force that compliments them financially. e.g. a moderately cheap army to collect.
Lizardmen have caught my eye as an army I would want to collect. They don't seem as common as space marines in 40K(fingers crossed) and don't seem to be too expensive to buy.
And added to that they sound like a pretty good, well-balanced fantasy starter army.
so, are they expensive to collect?
are they a good starter force that is fun to play and paint?
are they very common or few and far between?
oh, and one more thing, what year was the codex released since I don't want to start something when a new codex will be released soon.
thanks for any help you decide to give.
Actually the cheapest cost wise would be chaos. you can buy alot of stuff for thier units which can mean you field alot less which equals less money.
Lizardmen are probably Moderate cost wise. Not as much as an Imperial Guard or Ork army.
Don't wory about the army book being re-released, LM aren't due for a revamp anytime soon.
LM aren't too bad when it comes to ££, even though a lot of their models come in blisters. A battalion, another box of saurus and skinks, a character and you are well on your way to a 1000 points
One of the best features of the LM, I think, is Saurus. You use the exact same plastic Saurus models to represent Core, Special, and Rare choices, depending on what Blessings you want to use.
There's only one metal regiment in the LM book, Temple Guards, and a great many people don't use them (since they can only be used when a Slann is present, which is becomes a huge investment on your part, and since you can use a unit of Saurus with the right Blessing to work fairly similarly to Temple Guards).
Other armies tend to have a few choices of metal regiments. Heck, some of them even have metal Core regiments (Dark Elf Reavers, I'm looking at you...) which racks up the $ fast!
But yea, Saurus and Skinks, the two Core regiment choices - and really, two of the best things in the list in my experience - are both plastic, so you're in luck. Also, Saurus are expensive points-wise, so you don't need too many boxes, and Skinks come 24 to a box, so one or two boxes really should cover most lists.
I agree in that we're blessed with our Saurus and Skinks. You've only forgotten that they're very cool looking models.WHFB doesn't have such a common army like 40K has in the Angels of Death. They don't seem as common as space marines in 40K(fingers crossed)
Lizzies IMO too don't stand out in cost and in how widespread they're used.
For a starter force the Batallion Box supplemented by a character and maybe a couple of other units would indeed make a good start, but it's not a must.
Whether they're fun to play and paint depends on you. At least I think they are and on this forum I'm most probably not alone in that.
BTW Cold one riders just came out in Plastic so thats another unit thats cheap compared to what it used to be

2x12 units of saurus with full command- 444
1x16 sarus with full cmnd- 270
4x12 units of scouting skinks w/brave - 356
Sarus Cavalry wtih full cmnd and magical std- 350 or around there
so like ya all that comes to 1620
and money wise 90(battalion)+70 for sarus and skinks and 20 for char, so overall 180$ for all that
Also to answer the original post, Lizardmen are very cheap point-to-dollar as well as having very expensive other models such as a stegadon or some kroxigors(20$!!)
As a starter army, i hate to say this, but it is sort of point-and-click you bascially just move the sarus blocks up and shoot the army to pieces with your scouting skinks. If you take a slann, you will dominate the magic phase, with the ability to take spells from all the lores and having all these casting modifiers is great!
hope that helps!

Still it is true that it brings you vastly over 1k, giving you some options for variety. But 1.5k is just off the limit if you use every single model you have.
I don't mind the point and click feel. I just wanted a side army to compliment my new Imperial guard in 40k since it's a lot more popular in my area.
I'm kind of waiting for the new fantasy rulebook to come out first though before I start. (I have 6th edition).
I just haven't had the money to afford the money to get stuff but I will soon enough.
thanks for all your help
