Tried a search and didn't come up with any meaningful threads so forgive me if it's been asked before (please put link in if it is).
I've been debating between using Temple Guard or Warriors (upgraded save, shields, etc) to keep my Slaan in the thick of things but still be protected.
Normally I'd say Warriors hands down but there's one big reason why I'd pick Temple Guard: Stubborn. You get flanked a bunch with warriors and eventually you'll break and goodbye super-expensive bald hamster.
However, it's expensive for a unit that doesn't really give you a whole lot of flexibility. Maybe it's better to keep the Slaan by himself, or just keep him screened with lots of skinks.
I just want to know which is the better choice to keep your Slaan guarded (assuming you want him on the front lines).
Would like advice from the experts. Assume a 2,000 or so point game. Thanks!
well, that kind of depends on your army type. If your army is a rock hard line of saurus that just march towards the enemy and dominate anything that challenges them, then the temple guard are great, because they will have combat effectiveness.
In an army that has mostly fast moving units then the slann should be fairly well protected and can either stay alone in the pocket of your forces, or can come in a clean-up saurus group, if all your guys have charged in then the enemy won't likely get much flanking done.
if your army is mostly just plain blast them with magic, then I'd go for a small saurus unit (8 maybe?) just to give it a little bit of force, because youre back up priests will be giving LoS for the slann's spells.
My friend plays lizzies, and never runs temple guard. He thinks of them as a points sink, and frankly I agree. If you run them, you are using half of your points just to have one unit. Sauruses may be a bit worse, but they are cheaper, and you can run more of them. The slann by itself is pretty darn save, it can stay in the back and see most things becuase it is large. I say save points, and add a unit of say 16 sauruses to your army.
yes, but the slann's unit of saurus/temple guard doesn't neccesarily have to just sit still, thanks to the slann's ability to hover up above the unit in combat to cast spells. I personally think that it can work either way, but I wouldn't want to take the temple guard for points as well as $$ reasons.
Although if it has a good magic banner, that unit can be a real killer. I just wish that temple guard were one or two points less!
I agree with master Jabu, a unit of 16 saurus with the spawning of tlazcotl is the best way to keep your slann safe
I went with just 15 plain old temple guard. No Champiions musicians or Banners. Why? Well If they run they are most likely dead so musician is useless. Slann is in the second row so can't be challenge so champions not worth it. Slaan already has a banner and the Fear banner so no need to get a banner for the unit. Now keep in mind this was going from a Sacred host army of Tepok 19 Saurus full command to 16 Temple Guard with shields. I dropped one Temple guard for the Plaque of Tepok to get an extra spell
There is a thread not long down i think its something of a similar name so take a look at that aswell. I would say the problem with temple gaurd, if i remember correctly your slann HAS to be with them, whereas if you use saurus your slann can float around do his own thing, maybe hide in it for protection, or even run out of it if its in danger of that nasty flank. The other thing is with cold blood, it might make ld tests better but it also makes things like stubborn less advantageous, so for instance if the saurus lost by two they still only have 5/36 less chance of passing as opposed to the 9/36 less chance that normal troops would have in that circumstance (see the thread at the very bottom of this page for cold blood information).
The main problem that I have with Temple Guard is their crappy save. A 5+ just doesn't cut it. Sure, you can give them a 5+ ward against ranged attacks, but they will still dies too easily from hand to hand attacks. They should be equipped with light armor and have a 4+ save. If that was the case, I would take them a whole lot. You lose flexibility for the Slann, but stubborn is too good of an advantage.
