With 7th edition out and the no dice sharing between casters is there any other Generation but 2nd....???
I'm not even certain that, before the rules change, taking a Slann was worthwhile. If I ever field a Slann again, it'll have to be a 2nd Gen. There are so many hurdles to casting - making the roll, miscasts, dispel dice/scrolls & then any rolls the spell itself may require - that the Slann is just too expensive to make him worthwhile. 300 points to get a model that might be able to shoot a couple times. As a 2nd Gen, the extra die per roll makes it easier to cast anything, thus minimizing the first two hurdles. At that point, it might be worth the points to take one, but I'd rather just take skinks for the dispel dice, a diadem to carry over two power dice into dispel dice & Tepok Spawnings all around. That takes care of magic defense. Plus, if you're just dying to spend the points, the Carnosaur is just waiting...
Sure, I get along fine with a 4th generation at 2250 pts. Since my magic is used to support, rather than attack, I can count on getting a couple of spells off without much trouble. The diadem gives me any extra dice I might need. That, plus giving the Tepok spawning to my saurus units, pretty much ensures that I control the magic phase.
personaly i'v only used a slan twice and both times were my worst losses ever
i alway use old blood on carnisaur.....oooooohhhh yeah
back him up with stegadon, kroxigors, cavalary and suarus blocks
and magic-- couple of priest with dispel scrolls
hey im taking a slann (agianst my will, last time against skaven, my carnosaur was completly serounded and blasted with warplighning cannons etc)
i'm taking 4 generation, no up grades except a power stone (can't afford more)
i'v got a suped up skink priest (might get rid some of his stuff to put on slann)
what spell are best (to aim for) for the slann and skink agianst skaven (mass troops)
I just can't see a 4th generation making back it's points, EVER. even with a power stone and a diadem you will only have eight dice to use on a good day. This is the way i see it.
Slann costs you 325 points and he is a good caster with great survivability. BUT he is easily contained by a good enemy dispel phase because he just can't get the power dice to points ratio that other casters (or groups of) can get at a similar points cost. And if the greatest strength of the model is nullified it is 325 points of nothing.
If you pay a minimal cost (IMO) of 135 points for; +2 wounds, great magic defense spell, and the big one, an extra dice for every spell cast. These additional benefits make the Slann worth his cost because if use right he can DOUBLE his power dice pool. I need to say that again for my benefit, he can DOUBLE his power dice pool.
Take the following Slann for example
Slann Mage-Priest: 2nd Generation, Diadem of Power, Plaque of Tepok for 510 points. I think this is about right for a balanced Slann without going into the 700-800 range.
(hypothetical) I'm in battle and the opponent is running a single level 4 caster and 3 level 2's for a staggering 12 power dice. All i have is the Slann. Saving 2 power dice in the diadem for later i use 2(3) dice to cast drain magic (9+) on his strongest caster, removing his four dice, since he cannot share and the highest score he could roll would be a 12 (anyone know the odds of rolling 4 3's?) with strong chance to miscast. This leaves his underlings to do all the work with 2 dice each and 2 free for a total of 8. Then compare that to the 6 dispel dice the Slann (not including tepok marks for argument sake) carries with the +1 to dispel. Not fool proof, the enemy will get spells off but they will have to fight hard for everyone of them.
(another hypothetical) I'm in battle and the opponent has a single level 1 scroll caddy has one spell uses two dice max the Slann will shut this fool down with two dispel dice. So i save 2 dispel dice for the offense giving me 8 dice which i use on six spells. Using base spells from the lores for fire power (fireball, dark hand, burning gaze, burning iron, drain magic and one other random spell, thank you to Stonehambey). Using a single dice for the base spells and 2 dice for the heavier spells, 8 dice has become 14 dice... Ouch...
Well thats how i see any way.
He really is..Fair play but in my experience a 2nd gen slann is too good not to take. He's even better with the new rules set
My personal slaan outfitting is as follows,
Slaan mage + second generation + diadem of power + plaque of tepok + plaque of dominion = 560pts.
This guy gets a minimum of 7 power dice a turn, thats minimum!! With the extra dice per spell lets assume he gets maybe another 3-4 a turn and after the first turn he can have another 2 from the diadem. This means he gets a massive 12-13 power dice from one mage!!!!
Add in a couple skink priests with dispell scrolls (so you can use spare dispell dice with diadem) and you have a magically AWESOME army.
Plus, as an added bonus, skinks use law of the heavens which is superb and the slaan can play with any number of laws (my favourites include metal, heavens and maybe a little death or fire) ,
Second generation slaan are the way to go,
alright you guys have talked me into a 2nd generation slann but i'll have to sacrifice skink priest to reach costs
but not the equipment i can't afford it... what's esential out of those things (i can only pic one about points in other essentail areas for my plan)
ok i got rid of my skink priest and got 560 slann (no temple gaurd)
but this better work, im fighting clan skaven pestilance (lots of t4 troops, last time 12 troop choices, all 25 guys, frenzed, 3 attacks, etc)
my plan is all skinks moving back and shooting (scout), terradons down both flanks to take out warplighning cannon and chiefs leading 3 units (skinks) for combat when i have too
i'v worked out that i should get 3 turns of shooting and than because of that win combat allowing me to continue moveing back shooting for 2 or 3 more turns on next lot of troops (behind others) untill last combat
if terradons make it they destroy warpcannon and cirle around to hit and run thier flanks
slann by himself far from battle blasting away with lore of heavens into front ranks and than back ranks over combat
