I have recently picked up the Lizardmen Battalion, and am in the process of sticking them all together
The problem is, I can't decide wheather to equip my skinks with Javelins or with Blowpipes? Javelins are great for when I finally close with the enemy, and don't suffer nearly as many neg to-hit modifiers are Blowpipes do. However, Blowpipes have a longer range and can shoot multiple shots...
I plan to have 3 squads of 10 skinks as a screen or 'meat shield' and 10 scouting skinks as disruptors.
What do the Oldbloods think?
I prefer blowpipes. The distance is much better & the multiple shots are gravy. When I shoot, I calculate the target number, & if it's anything below 6, I use the multiple shots. That way, since the attacks are Poisoned, you cut out the wounding phase altogether, and your target's Toughness doesn't matter at all. The javelins' range is just too short for my tastes, and the skink's average strength hurts them against higher toughness opponents.
Hope that helps,
Bad Hat Harry
Just so you know, Skinks javelins count as poisned as well.Originally Posted by Bad Hat Harry
The only reason I would take javelins is because they will preform better in CC, as they have a save. Also there a better moving screen as they don't suffer any penalties from moving and shooting, or shooting long range. If a Skink with a blowpipe is moving forward and double-tap at at 12"... that would put them at -3 modifier, and if you don't double tap the blowpipes aren't any more effective than javilins (except for an extera 4" range).
This makes blowpipes seem like a better weapon for scouting sqads, as I can put them in position to gun down approaching squads...
I prefer blowpipes myself for the extra range and the multiple shots. A couple of units of skinks firing at a high toughness target can do some real damage. I've killed chaos spawn, rat ogres and various other nasties in one round of shooting with skinks before. Gotta love the little blighters^_^
So blowpipes for me, although both have their uses
I would go with spears for any units of 10 you are using for a "screen" and all other scouting units i would go blowpipes for sure. as mentioned above all you want is rolls of 6 so multishot is a godsend.
I know that both are poisoned. However, I still prefer blowpipes.

Skinks are not made for CC. If they get into CC, they are going to lose, shields or no shields, against pretty much anything. Their WS and T are too low. Against any S4 opponent, your javelin skinks are going to evaporate.

Exactly, but blowpipes also don't become less effective than javelins. Just like you said, modifiers can take the to hit target number over 6. In those instances, blowpipes are still superior for shooting, because your Skinks are further away & more likely to be able to stand & shoot if need be. Just don't use the double shots & you'll still wound on 6s.
Yea, I'm just starting my Lizardmen army, but I can't think of a situation where i would ever want javs over blowpipes. The ability to have situations where you can double tap and wound on 6's is too good to pass up.
The javelin, on the other hand, has a much greater accuracy as there are no negatives for moving, or for shooting at max range.
But what I've been able to recognize (by talking it through with the fine people on LO) is that all my skinks really need to do is roll 6's.
Skinks = rolls of 6, in my army
i always take the blowpipe becauses kinks with their WS2 and T2 wond last long in a normal fight even with a shield and javelins only have 8" range and tht is most races charge range.
Blowpipes have the multiple shot more range and you can still use your skinks as screen, in mosr cases if they survive they can flank or even rear an enemy and keep schooting at them without having to fear for a charge.
