I've been wondering about the best way to fight Dwarfs with Lizards, as they don't have any knights in shining armor. It seems like they don't have an obvious choice. Ok, Saurus Cavalry work as knights, but they're too expensive and still don't have as much armor as a human knight. Terradons are also very expensive for easily being shot down by artillery.
Skinks are effective versus all the war machines, except maybe gyrocopter and flame cannon, as they can only be singled out and then take the crew. However, they are easily mowed down by thunderers and crossbowmen.
Saurus could withstand the thunderers and such, but are too slow to effectively maneuver the Dwarfs. hm..
What are your experiences and opinions of fighting Dwarfs? I'd appreciate any useful tactic if anyone would like to share.
Aaaah, Dwarfs can be a nuisance aye ^_^
A JSoD with a two handed weapon can be useful for opening up a can of whoop ass on any poorly positioned Runies/BSBs.
A Nike Oldblood can even make light work of a Dwarf Lord if kitted out correctly, although you'll be sending a >200 pt character out on his own which could be a tad risky.
Terradons and flying skink chiefs of doom can (if all goes to plan) deal with enemy war machines. Remember that Dwarfs have no offensive magic so you don't have to worry about a magic defence yourself. In fact, an idea might be to not take any offensive magic at all yourself! He will probably have at least one kitted out Runie to stop some of your magic. He might even have a lot more if he thinks you're playing a Slann, so this could render a lot of his choices void.
There are some late night ideas from me, I'll post some more in the morning
Aye, ok. But that will only help once my army gets close enough. A skink chief accompanying a unit of scouts is probably the smoothest way to get rid of those pesky war machines early, as long as the skinks aren't mowed down by thunderers or similar annoyment before they get to do anything.
Arr... them short stunties have lots of dangerous elements to my army on the march! I guess i could use DoW knights, because if the enemy focuses all their fire power towards them, the rest of my army will be spared... must try that sometime.
Anyone else have any tips or successful experiences they'd like to share?
As a dwarf player, I'd be most afraid of blocks of saurus, with kroxigor flankers, screened by skinks. The kroigor ignore the armor of all dwarf units except Ironbreakers, and reduce them to a 6+. The saurus are your generic block infantry, pretty durable, and will likely inflict the odd wound or so on dwarves.
Don't kroxigor still have a special charge-through-skinks rule? You could just hide behind your skink screen, run merrily up beside the dwarves, and then run right through while your saurus (which would have to be unscreened for 1 turn) engaged the front of the unit.
Or you could run krox groups to both the front and sides. screened all the way and then smash things. scary. Plus lots of fear then.
btw, I'd probably arm all your skinks with blowpipes. shields do nothing against dwarf shooting, and most of the shots are going to bounce off anyway. so you are basically hoping to maximize your lucky shots, and blowpipes get more attacks/ more chances for the odd kill.
