although i've just started playing LM, i'm looking forward to expand my army to 2000 pts to be able to use the carnosaur model, but i'm wondering; what works best; kroq-gar, or a tooled-up oldblood on carnosaur - if the latter, i'd like some tips on how to best tool him up
Both are very good, but one thing you have to remember is that if you take Kroq-Gar, you have to take a large number of Saurus Cavalry as well, since Saurus cavalry become core units and Saurus Warriors become Special choices. Of course, if you were planning on taking lots of Saurus cavalry anyway, this isn't a problem, but if you wanted more infantry, you may want to consider taking just a regular Oldblood on Carnosaur.
As for Oldblood equipment, some of the other more experienced Lizardmen generals may be able to help you there.

i agree putting an oldblood on a carnosaur is cheaper & practically the same as Kroq-Gar. An oldblood on a carnosaur is excellent as he gets more attacks and armour save
this is the oldblood on carnosaur i might use
blessed spawning of itzl
blessed spawning of quetzl
blessed spawning of tlazcotl
scimitar of the sun resplendent
carnosaur (duh )
this comes to a total of 488 points, but for those points, i get a general with a 1+ armor save, 5+ ward save, immune to psychology, and 7 S5 attacks. i think kroq-gar's special rules don't quite make up the point difference and itp and higher AS are always quite handy IMO.

Isn't the old blood basically immune to psycology because he is on a Carnosaur? Or does Tlaz have some additional benefit?
You ignore fear and terror as you're on a terror causer, but you're not immune to psych by just riding a carnosaur. You'd still have to test if a US5+ got destroyed near you, or ran over you... And you'd be susceptible to the dwarven rune of challenge (or whatever it is that makes you have to charge them or flee) without being truly immune to psych.
The carnosaur can get blood frenzy which can never be lost even if broken in combat - making him immune to psychology.Originally Posted by moob
This means that the oldblood is also immune to psychology - BRB page 79

i'll be replacing the blessed spawning of tlazcotl with sotek:yes:
when blood-frenzy kicks in ,i then get 9 attacks on the charge with my oldblood, right? (since he also "suffers" from it)
but what do you think about the rest of the setup; e.g. should i replace the scimitar with a great weapon - this will not only be a lot cheaper, but i'll be able to open cans a lot easier with him - i guess 7 attacks on the charge at S7 could also do some serious damage against armored foes

Mounted Great weapons hurt alot on especially a Carnosaur, its two-handed so no shield bonus, plus only getting +1 strength and strike last. though if the Carnosaur dies it'll be +2 strength but still. Halberd is the same but don't strike last...not that it matters as nearly everything in the game is faster or at same initiative as you anyways.
If you want a cheap armour killer, the Burning blade of chotec is good, a total of -4 modifier to armour saves plus is a flame attack for the Oldblood.
Carnosaur doesn't give you the mounted bonus for armour, so Enchanted shield, Quetzl spawning, light armour, and an invuln go a long way in keeping your big expensive unit alive. Aura of Quetzl is good if you have a 2+ or better save as anything str 5 or more is the only real common threat to your armour.
- Light armour
- Sacred Spawning of Quetzl
- Sacred Spawning of Itzl
- Scimitar of the sun resplendant
- Maiming shield
- Aura of quetzl
This gives him a total of 8 str 5 attacks plus the carnosaurs base of 4 str 6 attacks. The aura kicks in when attacks against reach a sufficiently dangerous level.
With the simply massive amount of high strength attacks plus the carnosaur this guy can break almost anything in the first round of combat. Just to be nasty, field him in a unit of saurus cavalry!! A 5 wide front (inc. champion) gives 15 str 5 attacks, 4 str 6 attacks and 3 str 4 attacks on the charge!! Absolutely killer!!
Oh, yeh, in keeping with the threads topic, oldblood is waaaaaay better than Kroq Gar,
