Do I need to come up with the creds to hire a new one, or can I assign one of my ganger's or someone with the most exp as the new leader?

You assign the ganger with the highest leadership as the "leader". I say this because it will be their leadership used for bottle tests, and gangers get access to the leader only weapons anyway after the first game. However your newly assigned leader wo't give his leadership t pined gangers.
It really doesn't matter who you assign to be your leader because its just the highest LD being used for bottle tests. In actuallity there isn't one in your gang assigning a new leader is purely a fluff thing. At least that's what I beleive happens.

If a gang leader dies the ganger with the highest leadership becomes the next leader (I think it's picked at random if several have the same).. If a ganger obtains a higher leadership characteristic than the current leader I remember there are special optional rules (in pdf form somewhere I think) for leadership challenges.
If it's early in a campaign though I'd seriously consider restarting with a new gang. Losing a leader early on can be very crippling..
That depends on what he was tooled up with. If you've gone the twin-plasma guns route one of my regular opponent uses, then yeah, that might be a bit harsh
But having a low gang rating isn't too bad, especially if you've got a decent number of gangers. Just get into the habit of bottling as soon as you can - take the income and xp, but don't go for the win unless you can do it without risking too many of your gangers. The bonus xp each member will get for being the underdog should rocket up your gang rating in no time!

I'm interested to know where the leader challenges are located. All I really have is the books from GW's specialist section.
I think it's either in Outlanders, or under the section on XP advances.
But it's basically 1-2 Knife Fight, 3-4 Shoot Out 5-6 No Challenge
