The formation your in after deepstriking is heaven for template heavy armies. I've even had 2 plasma cannons in one turn kill 20 warriors after I veiled them.
One consolation is that new Blast weapon rules provide a chance of scatter.

But it also now means that your lord is safe ONLY when it is within the group. Otherwise it can now be picked out as a seperate target and be shot at by the enemy. Keep that in mind. Otherwise great Tactica.

That's not really an issue, as even if the lord Veil of Darkness's a unit that he has not joined, due to the new rules after they deepstrike he is automatically joined to the unit he deepstruck with because he is within 2" of them. This is also stipulated in the necron FAQ on the GW website.
The only way I could see for the lord to not be with the unit he VoD'd would be if he ran in the shooting phase after the deepstrike (I'm pretty sure you're allowed to do that), however I'm not sure in what situation you'd want to do that, unless you want the lord to VoD a different unit next turn and he's not quite close enough.

Yah, but also keep in mind that they scatter less, and heck, even ordinance that used to always scatter now scatters less. You can't miss with Blast weapons, they almost always will hit some Immortals/Warriors. If they score a hit though than even the small blast templates will get every Immorta/Warrior.

Personally before I veil I check to see if I really need the mobility to hit what I want to, or avoid what I don't want hitting me. In most cases I don't need to start veiling till the end of the game.

One strategy i use is to give him a nightmare shroud and land smack bang in the centre of their army, risky but i once made 5 squads of guardsmen run away

ha, that would be interesting, but it's a little too risky to leave 200 points and an HQ choice up to luck... especially considering that there is a big chance that it will either DS into the enemy units or fail fearing them
