unit of 5 warriors sustain 3 wounds the three models in the front of the unit are laid on their side, the next enemy unit declares fire, and the necron player claims cover due to the previous casualties... o.O

Models awaiting WBB have no effect what so ever on game play. So no it's not possible.

He's got a point, the rule doesn't state when WBB qualification is determined. So based on the first group going down they did have like models, then in a completely DIFFERENT shooting squad the remaining group went down. I could see how maybe your first group might have qualified.

The question is, where does it say WBB qualification is checked during our turn?
