    lychguards

I am still undecided on them. They are a good combat unit, and the shields give them all a 4++, but they are expensive and i find that i can use the points for more shooting. How have other people fared with them? Do you prefer shields or warscythes, and what sort of characters do you put with them. I was just wondering because they always seem to die when i use them.

I'm probably the last person to be trying to help with this since I just stared collecting the army and haven't fielded it yet. I plan on running a unit of 5 lychguard with the shields and put a cryptex and possibly an overlord with them. I think when the transport comes available I will mount them and get them forward and into the fray asap, it's one of my DE tactics I think will work for them. Good luck and I hope this helps.

The main thing Lychguard are good for is a Death Star army. You basically have to concentrate the majority of your army around a 450 point unit (not including characters). Any less than that and you risk them dying before getting RP, as people only need to kill 5. Always run them with sword n' board, as the Invuln. is a necessity.

When I play my "Lych-Bomb", I run them with an decked out Overlord, a Veil-Tek, and a full 10 men. The OLord is there for extra combat with a Warscythe and Mindshackle Scarabs and for survival with a Res. Orb and to take hits with his own 2+/3++. The Veil-Tek is only there to get you across the board to where you need to be. Start them out somewhere hard to hit or hidden, then Veil them near where you need to be. You can survive a turn of shooting thanks to 3+/4++/4+RP, and then move in to decimate your opponent.

Although a good list, this will not easily stand versus competitive lists and is mostly used for stores and fun.
    • First and foremost, you've dedicated over 1/3 of your list to a single unit; if it's wiped early, you may as well concede the game.
    • Second, Deep Striking can be dangerous; I've lost the entire thing to a bad scatter followed by a bad Mishap roll.
    • Third, Multiple-Combats are our bane; do not charge this unit in when another unit of yours is involved. Even if you do a lot of damage, if they wipe out a unit of Warriors, Immortals, or Scarabs, then you're still rolling snake eyes or fleeing. Of course, you know how well we roll to not be swept...

In essence, you need to create a list around them, with the rest of the units helping them. Add in some ranges firepower (Doomsday Arks) and harassing units (Wraiths or Tomb Blades) to keep your opponent off guard, while you move your Lych-Bomb around and take out unit by unit. Even then, you have to be careful about Deep Striking and avoid getting into Multiple-Combats. A fun list, but not the greatest.

Personally, would use them only in large game, where their main role in my opinion is to stand there as a phalanx between enemy and your immortals/doom/other fragile in cc but important units. Im thinking of using 2-3 squads in 1750++ games (2 protecting immortals and one, joined by obyron flying around the deck). I just wonder, if obyrons master is abroad CCb, does that mean that he can veil to that ccb without scatter? If yes, this combined with ccb survivability and speed can give you scatterles deep strike all over the board (although itll be a waste of his master's upgrades like res orb).

I use them in all games over 1500 points. I use them with dispersion shields and Hyperphase swords. I also never put them alone. I always put an Eternitytek with Chronometron in it so they can reroll one d6 roll per phase and one Necron Lord with res-orb and Warscythe in it just in case they are attacked by a walker or the like. I've had these monsters walk though just about everything. Last night they were attacked by 7 Chaos Terminators and a terminator Chaos Lord. We beat them all and had 3 Lychguard live. For the record, I had Orikan empowered, an Eternitytek w/ Chronometron, a lord w/ res-orb and weave, a Transmogtek and a Destrucktek in that group. I lost the Transmogtek, 2 Lychguard and the Lord. The rest of the group lived to assault his Havocs and still win that fight too. The best part was, the Eternitytek hit the Chaos Lord on the first turn of combat and wounded him with the Aeonstave reducing his WS, BS, initiative and attacks to one for the rest of the fight. I personally love this unit but only if they are played right.

I think you may have inadvertently been cheating there. You can only ever have one member of a Royal Court join a unit. So with the maximum two Royal Courts, the most Crypteks/Lords you could get in a unit would be two.
And Orikan doesn't even allow you to take a Royal Court... :-S

Wraiths with Whipcoils are better and the same price for a 3++ save

Better in some ways, not all. If you use the guards as a deathstar unit and have crypteks and overlords, they can be quite nasty, wraiths can only really do much alone or with a Dlord, which is still a very nifty unit, but its debatable on if its overall "better".

Yes, Wraiths get a 3++, have S6, 2 Wo, and 3 A. Plus, they drop opponents to I1, are Fearless, and move faster.

However, Wraiths are T4, don't have Power Weapons (only Rending), don't have RP, and are limited to 5 in a unit. Also, Instant Death will drop one of your five Wraiths in a single unsaved wound.

Honestly, they're two different types of unit. Wraiths are used to move fast through cover, taking out lone units hiding out (like scouts or long-range infantry) and to contest objectives. Lychguard are used to take on most infantry units (including heavy hitters) and to create a defensive wall.
