    Necron-Only or..?

Well, I've finally decided to start up a 40k army and get it finished and up on the table.. and it had come down to Iron Warriors (CSM) and Necrons. I showed both to my dad (who I persuaded to just now start 40k as the Space Marines; he likes them 'cause they're big ) and he said to go with the Necrons. So, instead of trying to confuse myself (again), I'm just going to roll with it.

Now, I have two ideas for the styles of army I want to play; firstly, the "normal" points limit is around 1850 (tourneys) or 2000 (friendlies). So, I'm not sure if my second "want-to-play" list will be effective with these points restrictions..

My first idea is to go with an All-Necron army; I wrote the list already and it is up in the Army Lists forum (if you could check it out for me..). This list centers around a strong core of Warriors with a Lord + Orb, and is backed up by Wraiths, Immortals, and Heavy Destroyers. No Monolith here; don't want one, don't need one.

The other idea is to go with the "fear" army; a while back, I saw a thread about it by, I believe, Gojiratoho. Pariahs, Flayed Ones, Gaze of Flame.. the Deceiver.. etc. I think this army would be incredibly fun, if a bit difficult to use, but it would certainly, if nothing else, look good on the table and really psyche my opponent out. However, I'm not sure how effective it will be when it is only around 1850-2000 points.. Pariahs and the Deceiver, especially, are incredibly expensive points-wise, and I don't want to go too low on the Necron models count for Phase Out to be easily accomplished.

So, I'd like opinions; neither list is going to use a Monolith (All-Necron = no Monolith, and the Monolith would take way too many points away from the fear army, when I need those points for as many Necrons as I can squeeze in when I have Pariahs, etc. inthere) and I'm not a huge fan of Scarabs.

Keep in mind, I want the first list to stay All-Necrons; so, while you can feel free to suggest things to me, I won't be changing my mind; so suggesting things like Pariahs, the Monolith, Tomb Spyders, etc. will be a waste of your time.

Any and all help will be appreciated!

(How many people on here play Necrons, anyways? It seems almost empty compared to other forums..)

You HAVE to go for the 'fear' army. Get several practice games in before a tournament and it will be reasonably formidable- it's totally not what players would expect from necrons. I'd consider wraiths, too. They fit with the fear theme and would work very nicely when putting together crossfires. Destroyers would work well, too, of course but they'd already be a bullet magnet if they were your main firebase.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!

Well, my biggest fear with the fear army is the whole.. not many models thing, and even less of them being Necron units.

    Maybe something like this:

HQ: Deceiver, Lord + Res. Orb + Gaze of Flame/Nightmare Shroud
Elites: 8x Pariahs, two: 8x Flayed Ones
    Fast Attack: three: 1x Wraith
Heavy Support: two: 1x Heavy Destroyer
Troops: as many Warriors as I can fit

However, it'll be very much expensive.. I'm not sure how well it'd work.

    Something like that, maybe..

    Any other opinions on this?

    YOU NEED DESTROYERS!!!

They are one of the necrons best units and they contribute to phase out, 2 units of 3 gives you serious mobile firepower that noone will want to mess with and in an 1850 list they shouldn't drain too many points IMO.

Well i like your idea for a "necron" heavy army. in 1500 pts i myself use 40 warriors and 6 destroyers. the only non necron units i use are scarabs and tomb spyders. you can see my concepts for army list in the army list section. pahrias take some skill to work with well but if you are patient and are willing to try it i say go for it. i have seen it work wonders and also seen it flop. tyrinids it tends to flop with so be wary of them with your fear list/tactics. you may want to add the idea of tomb spyders to your army as they are great backup troops and counter chargers for your warrior bases. I also agree that you need destroyer(vice heavys). they always for me pay their points back and then some. however the decion is all yours. you may want to play with proxys at first just to see what works for you. i did this a few times using cardboard circles the same size as the bases to see what worked well for me.

basic buying list for a good start is two battle forces and a lord/dlord.

after that you fill out your army. but the basics are all in the battle forces.
    20 warriors
    3 destroyers
    5 scarabs

doing it this way is the most econmical way of buying your basic troops.

hope this helps and good luck, maybe one day i will see you across the table from me.
"One after one, by the star-dogged moon,
Too quick for groan or sigh,
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
And cursed me with his eye.

    Four times fifty living men,
(And I heard nor sigh nor groan)
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
They dropped down one by one"
