Hey all, just a quickie. WHat formation do you use with 5-strong units? 3 in front, 2 in the back, 4 in front and one just hanging on, as the casualty in spe, or just 5 in front? It seems fun, but very hard to manouver. Anything would be useful, thanks!
Do you find you have trouble with panic tests with groups of 3 or 4? It means 1 casualty and you have to roll. With 5 or more you need at least 2 dead before testing. I would think that if you can't get into combat before you lose 2 or more ogres to shooting you are having loads of problems anyway.
well, I run 50+ gnoblars in many of my lists and use them to screen alot. I mostly use naked bulls in units of 3 and then Ill run Ironguts in bigger units.
I usually have a couple units that panic before they can get stuck in (hopefully to rally later on) but with units of 3 you can get alot more units so it doesn't quite hurt as much as if a larger unit were to run.
I also don't fear bolt throwers that much when my 3 ogre units don't have a second rank to take a wound too. Unfortunately, I haven't played High Elves before (most of my opponents being dwarfs, wood elves, and O&G) but it seems to me that with some gnoblar screens, and some well timed charges, you could wipe the floor with those T3 pansies.
That's interesting about the bolt thrower. A house rule at our store is that with Ogres in a 3x2 formation, since you don't actually have a legit rank, there are no ranks to penetrate.
the books states that its not a question of legal ranks, but house rules dont come from the book now do they? THe question remains... 5 strong ogre unit, facing a bolt thrower. What configuration shall I set it in
Even 1 model is a rank, it just doesn't count for the +1 to combat resolution.
The other good thing about 3 or 4 strong ogre units is that you can still rally with only 1 ogre left. It will save you a lot of victory points and it will rally, being a bellower.
well, even with bolt throwers thrown into the equation I would have to say that a front rank of 3 with 2 behind would be best, or possibly a frontage of 4 with one extra in the back rank. I find 4 to be unwieldy at the best of times and anything more is just rediculous.
This question would also be easier to answer if we knew what the rest of you list is like. Without Gnoblars for CR and screening I would suggest not even going with units of 5 and just getting multiple small units of 3.
