Eternal Guard?

I've heard many peoples success stories with using eternal guard, and frankly I want a ranked unit! So instead of writing an entire list and adding them in, I decided to just write them up and supporting characters!

  • Highborn [235]
    -Great Weapon
    -Rhymers Harp
    -Light Armour

  • Noble [152]
    -Amber Pendant
    -Light Armour
    -Battle-Standard Bearer
    • Warbanner

  • 20 Eternal Guard [320]
    -Full Command
    • Banner of Dwindling

Total: 707

The amount of pain that this squad can bring is just nasty! I'm starting out with a CR of 7'ish right off the bat! And 3 of my models strike first no matter what happenes (a godsend for me :p). An added chance of running my opponents down after their defeated is a great added bonus!

So basically what I'm asking is, is all that worth 700 pts? and is their anything else that is seen as 'mandatory' to go along with them?

As an aside, can I take the Warbanner on my BSB along with the Amber Pendant as they add up to over 50 pts of magical gear?

Annoyance of Netlings on the Highborn is a good idea.

Challenges can ruin a Wood Elfs day and ruin that units chance of working.

I'm not sure that the Banner of Dwindling is the best option. I think you should consider putting the warbanner on the Eternal Guard unit and having the Amber Pendent on the BSB.

The Uber EG Unit is always a point of debate for me - on paper it looks very appealing, but in the end I have a hard time investing that many points in one unit. Unless you're playing a huge game, you've invested quite a chunk of your points into one unit that is but a few die rolls away from going away. A BSB and a general in the unit helps minimize the risk of it running, but the fact is it is still very possible.

With so many other tasty options at my disposal, I have a hard time putting a lot of faith in the gigantic EG block.

Even though it looks counter intuitive I would drop the BSB. At the very least remove his magic items.

A unit of 24 EG w/Highborn (rhymer's harp & AoN) is very strong. Full command and warbanner of course.

If you invest anymore points though then you won't have much of an army to work with.

I disagree. Keep the BSB.

I run a unit of 23 EG, full command plus the warbanner, with a Highborn (AoN, Rhymers Harp) and a BSB (Oaken Armor).

This is the most effective unit Ive ever used. They have yet to lose a fight, even against very strong opponents like Chaos, Dwarves, and Lizardmen.

Only once have I lost more than 2 models out of the unit.

They have combat res 7 and dish out a lot of damage. I strongly recommend them in games of 2000+ points.

Also, some people feel weird about having Regeneration on the BSB, but I swear by it. Its saved him many times.
