First off i'd like to say that im completely new at warhammer 40k, i've been painting miniatures for more than 15 years, but just never got arround to playing Warhammer,
SO i've narrowed my choice of army down to Imperial Guard (specifically the Vostroyan), and Daemonhunters, and im wondering if im able to combine the 2 forces, taking what i liek from each and creating an army that way?
if so which would you recommend me focusiing on?
Yes, it is possible to take both in a single army.
I'd go with allying the Grey Knights to the Imperial Guard. That way you can keep all the juicy Heavy Support choices of the Guard, such as Basilisks and Heavy Weapons Platoons, and still get a decent amount of Close Combat goodness from the Grey Knights.
Check out the Imperial Guard forums for some details and look at some army lists for ideas.
well imperator it is possible to take imperial guard and daemonhunters in the same list even without using the apocalypse rules. you simply must have all you compulsory slots filled with gaurd choices then you can take Daemonhunter choices (im not sure on the specifics here).
Yep, read codexes £ 12 each and get a Rulebook - wait until the rules change later this year before buying that. Koff-Ebay-Koff.
Very basic explanation though - an army must have a command unit and 2 troop choices.
If you do IG as your main you can have Daemon hunter allies - one of each choice (Command, fast attack etc) but no DH heavies (Dreadnaughts etc) but you do get Imperial Guard Tanks - which in the game are good.
If you do DH as your main you can indenture IG into your army - although this limits what you can slot in a bit more you can have a Leman Russ (if you get 2 IG squads, on top of your 1x command and 2x Troop)
In short you can mix them, with either. If i chose with a painting / modelling slant I would do Daemonhunters with IG Indentured troops - The modelling options on these are awsome, and painting too. It'd work out cheaper "HAAKK-that statement would make a rat vomit" as you're getting how many metal IG Troops?
Find some people and borrow their army - learn to play first, then try or at least watch while understanding before investing godzillions of pounds and time into a army.
I now expect a email back in two years with a golden demon army showcase and a flattering letter now you know.
p.s. to pass the time until what's happening comes apparent get a 10 man Imperial guard squad or 2 to paint to pass the time before new rules round. And they might get harder to obtain as time passes.
