Do you think taking Banshees or Spiders in Combat Patrol is a good idea?

Read above.

The reason why I decided to collect the Eldar is because of their fighting style (specialised troopsbut I'm not sure if I can afford to put any Banshees or Spiders in a 400 point list.

Do you think they would be effective?

I don't think banshees would be hugely effective due to their low strength and mediocre armour save. power weapons is nice yes, but one walker or heavy bolter will really ruin their day.

Warp spiders on the other hand, whilst expensive, do have very nice guns and you can tool the exarch for combat so they're an all-round good unit, especially in small battles where they can dominate. Not forgetting that the highest AV value you'll find in combat patrol is 12, which spiders can glance. Obviously they win out on the manueverability front.

You'll be able to afford a small unit of aspects, but it'll be one or the other because they are fairly expensive. I myself would recommend warp spiders for their superior speed and hitting power. You'll also be able to support them with a squad of Jetbikes, recommended with a Warlock with a Singing Spear and Destructor.

You'll have some spare points after this, to add more if you want. But I fielded something like this with Warwalkers on top too.

spiders

For a small game spiders have more general utility.

If you'd care to be able to field more troops, I'd recommend either dire avengers or striking scorpions. Both can move quickly and are good against a range of opponents.

cheers,

out of the two spiders work in CP, banshees are just too light and will get mowed down before they ge there, asuming you are not doing biker/vyper/walker army, then it is a good idea in 400 points to take 3 units of 120-140 points for eldar, typically the following do well:

scorpions (infiltrating)
dire avengers
possibly pathfinders
spiders
vypers
dark reapers
war walkers

my son uses them a lot in touneys (our local indie stockist runs regular CP tourneys), his list is typically:

4 reapers
4 scorpions with exarch, claw, infiltrate and move through cover
rest of points go on dire avengers with exarch, 2 catapults and bladestorm (not sure of exact unit size but 6-8 seems to be about it

last tourney he played he came second overall, the reapers eat marine squads in CP since they are mainly small squads, just stick them in cover well back, mostly they eat opponents since often as not they are outside smallarms range so only the odd heavy weapon gets to shoot at them and they have a good armour or atleast a cover save

to be fair the army he lost to in the last tourney was IG, with a chimera, but he rarely encounters them, however, yes as others have said, that is where spiders are plain mean, Ds and pump 10+ str 6 shots into his rear armour

dragons are not any good for CP, they lack the range and will get eaten befoer they achieve much

Ive played combat patrol and have come up with the same question. I found that warp spiders are alot better even though they are expensive. Banshees are just too fragile to take in sucha low points game since they will probably attract the most fire than any squad in the game. you probably wont need all those power weapon attack anyway. Just stay at range and pick off squads one by one. With warp spiders it should be no problem.
