Wargear Choices

I'm new to Warhammer 40K and am playing a CSM army. This is probably a silly question, but what are the rules pertaining to the choice of wargear? If your model is built with a bolter, are you restricted from using two one-handed weapons in play? Do the rules imply that each model includes the entire wargear list unless a substitution is declared?

Thanks in advance.

The model may generally be assumed to have all his basic kit that he gets without paying for upgrades. Anything you pay extra for to purchase as an upgrade, such as a plasma gun or power weapon, needs to be represented on the model. This assumes of course you're using an official citadel representation of the trooper. If you're proxying and/or doing 'counts as' people will expect you to be more explicit about who's who.

Chaos have something called uber grit.

They can now shoot with bolters one turn, then the next, use close combat weapons and bolt pistols.

The armoury no longer exists. All upgrades are in the relevent unit selection. So it will say in the terminator section "2 models can replace their plasma pistol for a twin linked lasgun for 20 points per model"

See?

Thanks for the clarification. Based on the explanation, a CSM may utilize anything specified in his wargear from the codex army list, regardless of whether or not it's represented in his model. I was trying to locate this in the codex/rule book, without success. Can anyone point me in the right direction? (page numbers, etc)

The CSM codex (and Dark Angels, Eldar and presumably any subsequent ones!) tells you what the Marine gets as wargear, like Pika_Power said. At the moment, WYSIWYG is still required for tournaments and is generally appreciated by players because it means they can see what they're likely to be up against. The sprues in the boxed sets of CSM provide you with a fairly wide variety of extra bits like pouches and holstered pistols which allows you to represent the weapon on the model.

WYSIWYG was introduced to prevent people merely saying that "this model has "X" or "Y" weapon on it" while not having their army list to prove that they had indeed paid the points for the upgrade. With the style of the new codices, ie no Armoury pages, I don't know that *having* to show bolt pistol and combat weapon and bolter is as rigid a rule as before, since these are now standard equipment rather than ones which were purchased from an Armoury List. Nevertheless I would tend to show the CCW and the bolt pistol, as this would remind me to make an extra attack in combat (since I'm stupid enough to forget!).

This is only my opinion, of course. Even so, the wording in the Dark Angels Codex on P.78 under Wargear and Options does not ever mention the phrase "must be represented on the model". Also, if there are options for upgrades which are *not* included in the wargear section in the particular entry, then the codex says you must pay for them:

"You may not take an upgrade unless a model in the unit actually has it".

Again, it does not say that the upgrade has to be shown on the model, but I think it might cause problems if you didn't show an assault cannon on a Ravenwing Tornado, for example.

Compare all this to the Tau Empire Codex, which does have an Armoury page (P.25). The wording is:

"...and all equipment, other than wargear (which is assumed to be integrated) must be represented on the model".

So is GW moving away from the WYSIWYG demands with these recent codices (CSM, etc)?

I'd say only so they don't have to totally rehash their already fantastic selling marine sprues - There's just not physically enough holstered pistols (or grenades if you get dev's)
I should know - i wanted to do a truly A###ally retentive WYSWYG Dark angels company. Yes, i said company (106 men, 9x tanks)
There's just not enough pistol holsters on ebay - i looked over 3 months.
I decided to do a imperial fists company instead, and have a 1250 force of DA (Side force - i'd got vets, and lovingly done a DW command squad up.)
am waiting for 5th before going further than my 2x squads and "Ahem" yellow baneblade in case it turns out they're wrong. (Every sargent gets Ter Honours, and alot of them, for Imp Fists fluffiness get thunder hammers - will that be legal?)

Agreed, but most of my friendly games are rather "I have what you can see on my roster" and this allows me to equip my models with absolutely everything but the use is restricted to what I have paid for.

For example, A Rhino with smoke launchers looks great when modelled but you may not want to use it like that for every game, so I tend to stick them on the vehicle and just tell my opponent whether or not if I have paid for their use or not.

Cheers.

Its important to remember(especially in the case of newer SM and chaos codicies) that the gear that units come stock with should be represented on the model but by the rules of WYSIWYG they don't need to represented on EVERY model in the squad. So you don't need two types of grenades, a BP, A bolter and a CCW represented on every CSM you own, just scattered around in each squad.
