A combat heavy vampire lord, which characters can't he take on?

Its important you're vampire lord is not killed, so who do we need to look out for? who is a combat vampire lord no match for? not including monsters like the bloodthirster etc.

So far the only ones I've had trouble with have been Empire Lords (special characters) with runefangs or other items that autowound with no saves from hits. Probably some bad dice rolling on my part, but when they hit, they hurt bad. Plus unless your lord is in a unit of other good combat troops, combat res can be a real pain.

Any kind of greater daemon, except for maybe a LoC. GUO gets s8 for the first turn of combat and has 10 wounds, and probably either has the balesword (very brutal power) or a 4+ save/regen/5+ ward, and with both sets you will probably always strike last. With a KoS, they can heal wounds, they always strike first, they are S6 with armour piercing, they get a lot of attacks, and they have some pretty brutal abilities. Bloodthirsters have high initiative and will pretty much always have infinite hatred, can potentially have 2d6+2 attacks for an average of 9, or can have s7 and a 3+ AS along with their ward save.

Even LoCs can be deadly in close- if they cast flaming sword than you're probably going to die to the 6 s8 attacks that hit on a 2+.

Bloodletters, bloodcrushers, and Heralds of Khorne are all equally as bad for your vamp's health. Bloodcrushers get a massive number of attacks if even one survives (and they're all KB), bloodletters are all KB, and heralds will generally be 3 KB s7 attacks, 2 s5 KB attacks, and a 0+ save. Ah, and fleshhounds are 2 s5 KB attacks apiece IIRC.

So my recommendation? Avoid GDs (which should be obvious), except for Tzeentch ones which you want to charge as they can really dish out the hurt with their killer magic, and avoid all things Khornate unless you're sure you can kill them before they can touch you.

daemons in general are annoying. dwarf lords are pretty rough. i suggest just sending a wight king after him, worked in my games, a wight king on a charge with sword of kings. in one large game my wight king killed a lord and that one anvil dude

watch out for empire lords or heros with that mirror magic item that changes stats, the van something spectrum, many a time a vampire is killed by a battle wizard!!!

do not send him up against a tyrant. Most likely, you won't have a frost blade (as it's not really worth taking unless you start building a specific anti-ogre list), and the tyrant almost always has the tenderizer, which means 5 WS5 S7 hits at D3 wounds - so even one wound could be enough to finish of your vampire:0

I don't think that there are too many things that a properly tooled vampire combat lord can't take on, even greater daemons.

I'll use a vampire lord with Red Fury, Forbidden Lore, (fire) with any armour you want as an example. This build is dependent on getting the flaming sword of rhuin off, but with your standard VC army getting a spell like that shouldn't be too hard. So let's try against a Bloodthirster. I'll give the vampire the charge because of two reasons: first is seeing as how the thirster is frenzied it shouldn't be too hard to set it up into charge range for the vampire using raise dead and such, and second if the thirster charges your vampire he's dead, plain and simple. So if the vampire charges he has 5 str. 8 attacks that hit on two's. He'll hit about five and wound four. Since he's strength 8 and magical the thirster get's no saves and takes all four. This gives the vampire another four attacks, of which about 4 will hit and three will wound, killing the thirster off in one round. Again it must be said that if the thirster gets a chance to attack you're pretty much screwed, but on average a charging vampire lord tooled for combat will drop the thirster in one round.

This holds true for basically any big nasty, against an ogre tyrant you face at best a ward save of 5+, but he has 2 less wounds than a thirster. Against a dwarf lord it get's a little trickier, but if they have invested in thorough protection then they are less likely to have a powerful offense and therefore you can take a round or two of punishment from them depending on your armor choice. If they didn't invest well in protection then they will probably fall before they can use that offensive material they spent so much on. Some of the new khorne units with a lot of killing blow might be a little tricky, but you could take the cadaverous cuirass if you're really worried. Grimgor can be dealt with by armor selection, if you take the nightshroud then he loses ASF and will fall before he gets to strike.

The only thing that I can think of that wouldn't be killed by a vampire would be a star dragon, but the rider should be relatively easy to take down and if the vamp is given a dragon as well it should be a little more feasible.

In the new Daemons of Chaos army book, blood thirsters are no longer frenzy. And their daemonic aura saves are becoming true ward saves, too (ie, not denied by magical attacks). So I'd think twice about attacking one of those when you see them in the new book. :)
