Why the rending tyrant? why?

As a new player (kinda) I would like to ask for some clarification.

Why is it that people put rending claws on a Hive Tyrant when it is already a monstrous creature?

I know the rules for monstrous creatures WEEEE!

However, I must be missing something here, so I'd just like clarification please. (making a winged tyrant and I'm trying to figure out what to put on it.)

Thanks for your time

Against vehicles is the only bonus - however many people who do take rending claws tend to do so because they forget the monstrus creature rules at the time (that or they just think the arms look cool)

best loadouts for a winged tyrant are 2 scything talons or 2 sets of twin linked devourers

Also if you are worried about higher toughness models like a C'tan or wraithlords the rending claws would come in handy. Though generally you will for the most part just take two sets of scything talons.

As tempting as it is to write out rules in a post to demonstrate knowledge, please assume that your colleagues on LO are fully aware of all rules, and thus posting them merely insults them.

But, as everyone said, even against tough things like C'tan and Wraithlords, you're probably still best of maximising attacks rather than the chance of ignoring toughness.

More attacks will serve you better against a greater variety of opponents.

Additionally, your big bugs really shouldn't be aiming to take out a C'tan or W'lord in close combat, unless it's a specifically designed CC Carnifex, and if you have one of those why are you wasting the points on one? :p

I dunno.. rending just seems to work best on Genies and Raveners.

I'd agree, take an extra attack over rending for monsterous creatures. Rending is better served by your units with lower strength.

I sum it up to number of attacks. A single monsterous creature usually gets around 5 attacks. Your chances of getting a rend if 1 in 6. So "usually" you may get a single rending attack with your tyrant. (As always, this varies but I always like to work from "average".) By contrast, with no rending that 6-to-hit is most likely still going to cause a wound anyway.

Take a unit of 6 genestealers. 12 attacks with rending means you should get 2 rending hits right off the bat. (more for a charge, more if you take talons.)

Mathmatically it ends up being more useful on the stealers.

To carry on from Tam's great post.

Maybe that's why the Broodlord isn't that bad in combat considering his size.

He kinda fights like he's a monster - ignoring saves, and yet still has the potential with rending to off set his average strength.

That said, naturally he can hold his own against a Tyrant in an arm wrestly, so the toxin sac upgrade is almost a no brainer on a broodlord.

But, just to recap, that's probably one of the only situations where rending as well as natural armour ignorant moves is wanted.

I'd be very interested to hear if anyone is actually a strong advocate of rending on Carnifexes or Tyrants. Perhaps they know stuff we haven't considered.
