Red Scorpion/Black Scorpion color suggestions...

Greetings all,

I'm about to begin a Red Scorpion 1st Company project using Deathwing rules. I'm a bit hung up on colors. I have two things in mind, either doing the Red Scorpions as they are from Forge World or creating a successor chapter, the Black Scorpions, using a completely different color scheme. The Black Scorpions inconography would ofcourse be a black scorpion instead of the red.

Red Scorpions: I really like the grey/Mustard seed yellow w/ Red Scorpion, but it does seem a bit...bland.
Red Scorpions Shoulder Pads

or

Black Scorpions: No pics, but was thinking of using dark red armor (not Blood Angels red, but a LOT darker) more like a red burned color with dark gunmetal as an accent and white/bone as a major accent, and a black scorpion for the chapter insignia.

So what do you all think? I still kind of like the original red Scorpion colors, but am concerned how'd they look on the table.

Thanks!

Red Scorpions have a nice color scheme... but what you have proposed sounds more better. Although you have to find out that dark red... Scab Red? Gore Red (Word Bearers)? Or go to Vallejo products...

Anyhow I will be looking forward for pics...

I've seen a few Red Scorpion armies on the battlefield, and I like the scheme a lot.

If you decide to go for something different, though, dark red can be a little tricky.
A lto of reds have fairly poor coverage, so much so that I have found only 2 ways of getting a satisfactory colour, even with a dark outcome.
1. Mechrite Red. This is a godsend. To end up with a dark, brooding colour, I'd start with a base of Mechrite, then wash with Scorched Brown several times, until you are happy, then blackline. Add some highlights of pure Mechrite again, and job is a good 'un.

2. Work up from Scorched Brown, then Dark Flesh, then Red Gore. Much more time consuming, but also more controllable.

Definately worth doing a couple of test models for either scheme, anyway, and be sure to post up pics!

Thanks for the replies!

I really need to sit down and fiddle with the red. I'm thinking of a color similiar to World Bearers, but maybe even a bit darker. And thank for the paint and technique suggestions. It will help when I finally make the decision.

I also need to really decide on what color scheme to use. I wish I could find more pictures of a Red Scorpion army. All I've found are the pictures on Forge World :(

Just curious, but what about the Red Scorpion scheme did you like? Did it mesh well? It seems it may look a bit bland...

It's always looked rather striking to me, the charcoal grey works very nicely with the mustardy yellow, especially once you start integrating it with vehicles.
Because the shoulder pads are such integral parts of the marine anatomy, the yellow really serves to brighten the model up.

Well worth trying out IMO.

I was going to start a red scorpion army, but I could not get their colour scheme right. Wiki says they are black with red trim, GW has them as a sort of shadowy blue, IA4 has them like a grey colour.
I couldn't figure out the bluey colour, so used Charadon Granite on a few test minis and thought I'd cracked it, but it just looked so flat and dull I scrapped the idea and made my own, just like you, called the Night Scorpions.
Pics when (if!) I ever get a digital camera, but they are black, with tau ochre knee pads, shoulder trims and helmet stripe, bone details and scab red > blood red scorpions.

I really need a camera to show you guys my stuff - I'm a fairly naff painter and there are some real experts on here who i'm sure would be able to give advice.

If you're still working on the color scheme, I would suggest B&C's Space Marine Painter for trying out potential schemes. All of their painters have a very nice color picker so you can get the color you want on your image. The beta version has a very nice finalize option that provides close matches for each color used in several brands of paint. There is a link to the tutorial at the bottom of the page of each painter if you have any problems. The nice thing about these tools is that the final result is an image that you can use to post your scheme should desire further input or just to say "look what I've decided on". Their Wargear option can make for some very nice looking marines.

My suggestion colorwise is to go to the local craftstore (Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc...) and look over the selection of colors available there. I pretty much guarantee that you can find a dark red that is a more suitable starting point than the pathetically limited palette that GW provides. I've used several of the brands available for years with excellent results.

BTW, even though I've got some Red Scorpions sitting on the shelf waiting for paint, I really like the idea of the Black Scorpions' deep red scheme. You might want to even consider a maroon base, red ink wash (although orange has potential...), and a bright red highlight.
