Space Marine Paint Scheme Ideas

Hey everyone, I picked up a couple assault squads a few weeks ago, got them all assembled and base coated but wanted to try something a little different instead of the same ultramarine paint scheme that all of my basic marines have.

The assault squad is a 10man squad led by a jump pack Chaplain. I wanted something that offset them a little from the army but still had ultramarine ties. Also I wanted something that tied them to the chaplain. The Chaplain will have a traditional black paint job. I could use any and all ideas that you can throw at me.
I'm only a moderate painter so nothing to hard ect. This will just be a tabletop quality paintjob. Thanks a lot for the ideas! I look forward to reading them.

You could have them as aspiring chaplains - acolytes of some kind. Paint them all with mostly black armour, with the blue ultramarine shoulder pad.

Or mostly blue, with a black righthand shoulder pad, or anything in between.

...Just brainstorming...

That's a neat idea, can I steal it?! Though with you picture, all I can do is imagine a crazy scientist contemplating world domination by changing paint schemes:D

You could do gold armor with blue trim..but that would be ugly as sin.

You're on to me! NOOO!!!! This is the kind of plan that needs to wait, patiently, whilst the rest of the world carries on unknowing of its immiment destruction.

Guess I'd better move to plan B (Plan B involved forming a new plan, thats as far as I got).

Yeah, gold armour with blue trim - heh. Could be a bit garish! If painted well, still possibly good though, you can be surprised as to what styles can end up looking good with a well done paint job. :)

But yeah, steal away - spread the rebellion mate!

Change the color of the blue that you use on them. That'd be the easiest thing. Or, change their trim- silver instead of gold, gold instead of yellow, whatever. Paint their shoulders differently, black instead of blue, or blue on white. There are alot of tiny things you could do that would mark them out as 'different'.

More complex methods would be to drybrush/tirm them in gold like they do in the codex. The other option that came to mind when you mentioned them moving around with the chaplain was to halve or quarter them with chaplain-black, to make them look like a bodygaurd.

One of the most common tricks to assault schemes that I've seen is to paint the jump packs a different color, often something of an opposite tone to the rest of the armour (light if the armour is dark, or vice versa). I've seen red armour with black jump packs, blue armour with white jump packs... you get the idea.

As to doing them all in black -- meh, they'll look TOO much like the chaplain then. I think icons on the jump packs, armour or shoulder pads would go a long way. Less is more.

Or paint them as normal Attack Squads are but paint the helmets a different color, not showing veterancy of course, and the shoulder pad black as aspiring chaplains... ;)

I like Tsele's idea but I'd go with black helmets as well as should pads. It's a little more black and a think would give the feel of chaplain initiates better than the small amount on the shoulder pads. I also think that there probably are not a lot of chaplain initiates at any one time so a squad of 5 is probably max.

Awesome ideas, I think I'll use a little bit of everyones suggestions.
I got a pretty good idea what i want to do now. I'm going to paint a few of the marines, including the Vet Sergent with Black helmets to signify that they are aspiring Chaplins or personal bodyguards.
I'm going to paint all the shoulder pads Black with Blue trim and I am going to do the knee pads on the models that have them black as well. The jump packs will have a mix of black and red in them I think.
One other thought I had was doing the boots black. But I think doing that would make the models too black.
I'll give the models a good Black ink wash to darken their overall tone.

Thanks a lot for the help. When i get a couple of the models done I'll post some pics in this thread.

Red and blue are also, what is it, 3rd company? Or is it 5th? No, 5th has black trim. But yeah - its actually codex to have red and blue ultramarines! :)

I am, of course, only talking about trim and stuff like that :)
