Pariahs?

Hi Guys,

I am gunna be playing my mates at 40k soon, and I wanna make a 1500-2500 point army (so far i bought battleforce and lord = 1000 points). I been looking around the necron army lists, trying to find a list i like. I also tried making my own, but I couldn't fit my choices into the point range. I would like a C'tan in there if they useful, but I need suggestions. Referring to my topic title, I have seen no army lists on the site with Pariahs in them, are they a point sink, or are they actually half decent? The stats in the codex make them look good, but I need opinions.

Thanks

First I would suggest at least one squad of immortals and 5+ destroyers (personally I do 2 squads of 3 minimum!).

After that I would consider a monolith or Deceiver. Personally I'm liking the Monolith, amazing ability to reroll WBB a 2nd time, nice attacks and VERY durable (even more so in 5th I'm told).

The Deceiver on the other hand is a great CC unit, but also great since he can push back armies by forcing them to take leadership tests and such (can hurt if you run into fearless though).

Other than that, I'd recommend playing some smaller games and proxy the units. Pariahs are cool, but I heard is said they're not for the feint of heart since they are too spendy, and easily killed (wasted points). Tomb spyders in the right condition can be a nice cover for spread out units. Flayed ones are just blah for CC especially since they can't capture objectives in 5th like they used to. Heavy D's...I like regular D's myself, but to each his own.

Mainly, I would DEFINITELY get immortals and destroyers...after that, consider your deceiver or monolith.

FYI, check out the immortal conversion here (will save you TONS in cash):

I didn't make ANY flayed ones myself, I just made a FULL squad of immortals (I bought more flayer arms from ebay for dirt cheap! All in all I ended up with 10 immortals for $30 instead of $100! :). Btw, make sure when you put the other flayer on top, clean the hand off, and trim the other flayer to make them less tall, mine turned out VERY well with a little more attention to detail!

Pariahs are a good unit, but without WBB they just dont fit in to most peoples idea of a Cron army. Compare them to marines, or give them to Marines as an elite choice, then you would probably see them around.

However, as a starter to Crons id stay stick with the Basics. Work up with a Lith and some Immortals, then look at whether you want some Combat in there, or go all out with the firepower.

This is a standard "forum" topic, the army list sub-subforum is for actual..army lists.

Never actually used Pariahs but I never have a pure "necron" army anyway. Someday I'll try them. They work best in a phalanx formation

Pariahs are good in a few ways
-Strong against vehicles at range AND in melee. (very few units can claim this feat)
-Strong against infantry at range (as immortals)
-Disable psykers
-Screw with enemy moral
-Strong against characters and terminators.

However they are also bad in a few ways
-Not necrons (no WBB, no teleporty, no Phase Out) <-this is what scares most 'cron players away.
-Not enough attacks in melee
-Mediocre initiative
-Slow

I know what you mean about the points, but ya gotta learn to be a little picky choosy, playing some games will let you see what you like and dislike.

Hang on everyone!

*fiddles with TARDIS console*

*rrrrumble*

*Griiiiiiiind! Griiiiiiiiiiiind!*

*THUD!*

Whew! We've landed!

Thread moved.

Now, where were we? Ah, yes, the question. Welp, there's a stickied tactica on Pariahs that will give you better tips than I can, but the bottom line is, they're not worthless if you know what you're doing, and pair them up with a good companion unit. The pariah is good at being a support/backup unit, NOT a front-line warrior. One of these days, I'm gonna test them out so I can give better advice, but I know enough to know the "conventional wisdom" on how to use them.

Alright..... so first Pariahs can be useful , just like anything else in the Codex. I've hardly used them though. They are most effective in smaller units (a unit of 10 is a big 'free points! shoot here!" sign.") Use them to support other units, always keep them a minor threat, don't charge into combat alone, always keep them difficult to target / behind other more scary units.

A c'tan is always good (even skip out on a lord to get one) I would suggest the Deceiver.

Hope I can help.

Alright I thought up a little list with some of the more unique units you looked at, a strong warrior base, and destroyers.

HQ: Deceiver
Elt: Pariahs X5
Trp: Warriors x14
Trp: Warriors X14
Trp: Warriors X14
FA: Destroyers x3
FA: Destroyers x3

Total points: 1500
Phase out: 11

This army will make a solid phalanx, with the deceiver and his "retinue" of Pariahs as a centerpiece. It's a bit slow so the destroyers will be providing cover fire until you get within rapid fire range.

Start off with a battleforce, they save ya a good bundle. After the battleforce getting a leader is next up. Think about what you want to field though none of the leaders are in the cheap range price wise especially C'tan.

Uhm, no lord with res orb!? I think you might regret that when you start hitting dbl strength weaponry or power weapons. My Res orbs have saved my phalanx NUMEROUS times...without it, you lose your troops MAIN ability to be so darn tough...

Oh no, our warriors would actually die like everyone else, the humanity.

I kinda like to stick with one HQ, though the resorb is rather important to have especially when someone is just starting. C'tan and Pariahs are rather advanced units from a tactical standpoint, I was just trying to put together an effective list that included them as an example.
