Expanding the Horde

Greetings mortals, ==Me== here.

Daemons have captured ==My== fancy and I'm looking to expand ==My== collection.

I currently have:
10 Bloodletters with full command
10 Daemonettes
3 Flamers
1 Soul Grinder

It isn't much, but between them Orks, Marines, and Skaven it's all I've got. But, after using them at the 5th edition launch event I'm inspired to pick up more (at least 1000 points for both systems).

Here's where you come in. What would you recommend to build up a solid 1000 points that can be used successfully (not WAAC, but viable and fun)? And, for bonus points, it has to be on the cheap (around $100 ).

I was thinking a box of Dryads for Horrors and maybe a Herald, another box of Bloodletters or Daemonettes, some Hounds, and a pair of Fiends to top it off. Or maybe go big and grab a GD or DP and fill out Troops more? Perhaps some Nurgle?

So, what do you say LO, will you help ==Me== lay waste to the mortal realm?

Alright, I'll take a shot at it for you :)

First of all, you mentioned that you want this Daemon army to be used both for Fantasy and 40k... well that might influence a bit your choice of units because as far as I've heard so far, many units considered "bad" in 40k are "good" in fantasy, and vice versa :) (the Furies comes to mind).
Also, taking Dryads to proxy as Pink Horrors might be good for 40k, but would likely just be confusing in a fantasy game...

That being said! I'll assume that when you said you had a "full command" for your bloodletters, it means you got a Chaos Icon, an Instrument of Chaos and a Herald of Khorne? That would give you 1 HQ choice, but definitly some more is required.

I would suggest getting some backup for your Soul Grinder, too. From what I've heard, if it comes alone, all the enemy anti-tank weapons will go his way. Now, if you were to field a Monstrous Creature or two along with it, then your opponent will have to split his fire, at least, raising the survivability of your Soul Grinder. You don't have any Greater Daemon, so maybe one would help fill out your points.

If you want to do it on the cheap, even if it would be a good idea to have, I wouldn't think of getting the Fiends of Slaanesh. They're a bit on the expensive side and getting only 2 of them isn't really worth it in my opinion.

You might want to buy another unit of 3 flamers, though, these are always good! And also some more troops. They are vitally important in many 40k missions, now, and having more than 2 squads might be a good idea. You could just bolster your ranks of Daemonettes or Bloodletters, but you'll start to seriously lack some anti-tank power going above the 1000 point games. The Soul Grinder can only do so much :p So taking more Tzeentch units might be a good idea at this point.

Nurglings are a good choice too, and I can see you proxying some easily if you don't want to buy too many (or even making them up yourself! :) )

I know, there's just so much diversity in the Chaos Daemon list to easily choose from :p

Ok, so I'll definately be grabbing some Dryads for Horrors (I'll remove any foresty bits, bend some twigs and paint them all funky to remove any confusion) and some Flesh Hounds (maybe Karanak), and that adds up to around 60 bucks (yikes!). For the HQ I'm thinking either a Tzeentch Herald or Khorne Herald on a Jugger, maybe both. I would like Fiends and Crushers, but they're so expensive and all compete for the same slot in Fantasy. I'll probably pick up more Bloodletters, because who can say no to them? Furies are also tempting, but they are abysmal in 40k and awesome in Fantasy. I may even pick up a Daemon Prince to support the Grinder, despite its suckitude in Fantasy.

So, Dryads, Hounds, Bloodletters, and a DP. Around $120. It isn't bad, and I can probably work with it.

Or should I go for something else? Screamers? Crushers?

Fiends work well in 1s or 2s in fantasy, but in 40K I think you'd probably want at least 3 per unit. With three fiends you have a fairly decent chance of nuking any tank not named "Land Raider" or "Monolith", and they also work amazingly well against hordes and decently against armoured opponents.

Hounds are good in both systems so it might be worth it to pick up a second box of those instead of the DP or something.

I'm not sure about fantasy but I'm a huge believer in plaguebearers for 40k. Now I know the metal models are kinda pricey, so I strongly recommend doing what I did which was to take a box of fantasy beastmen and use some greenstuff to give them bloated and distended stomachs. Its a far more economical way of doing things.

I was thinking of Plaguebearers, but they represent a significant investment and would probably dominate a Fantasy list in terms of points.

Here's what I was thinking for now. Bloodletters, 2 boxes of Hounds, Dryads, and Furies or a Jugger.

Herald of Khorne on Jugger or chariot (dirt cheap for DP stats)
Herald of Tzeentch (anti-tank)

3 Flamers

2 units of Bloodletters with icons
1 big unit of Horrors with the changeling
1 unit of Daemonettes

8 or so Hounds

Grinder

Of course, I could go without the Bloodletters and Jug and pick up some zombies for Plaguebearers. That's a more reliable icon bearer but I think I might be missing some combat killiness. Using beastmen is a good idea, ==My== brother recently moved on to Dwarfs so I may have to salvage a few :D

Thanks for the input so far, rep for everyone!
