hello, my interest has recently been rekindled in warhammer and I am considering eldar as the army to use now. I have a few models but no real army I have, however, always been interested in eldar. However I am also strongly considering orks

I'd be grateful if you would be so kind as to help me make a descision telling me some pros and cons of being an eldar player. Keep in mind I've been out of the hobby for awhile, and haven't read the new codex so I have no idea what things like bladestorming are.

Thanks for your help

I'm not sure if I am the right person to help you here, since I haven't played my Eldar much with 5th Ed. rules. But here's what I like and don't like.

Even with the new "run" rule that all infantry units get (move an extra d6 in the shooting phase instead of shooting but you can't assault) , Eldar are still one of the fastest armies in the game, the only army I can think of that's faster are Dark Eldar. As well, you do have fleet of foot on most of your units (same as run but you can still assault).

Comparatively to Orks, I find that Eldar require you to have a greater strategical depth to your overall plan for the game. Most units in your army will only have a single task at which they can fulfill, so each individual unit is not that versatile. However each unit is great at whatever they are meant to do. Ex. striking scorpions are awesome at assaulting mass numbers of infantry with lower armor saves, due to them 3 attacks at S4, but they will have a lot of trouble with units that have heavier armour since they will be getting hit back and they have a lowly T3.

I'd tell you more but I have to get off the computer so I'll probably post some more info for you tomorrow.

fleet of foot is nice but i find myself rarely wanting to move run and assault with most of my units. Unless they're melee oriented units the rule doesn't help your guardians or other troops as much. Eldar on a whole are highly specialized as said previously. They are also pretty weak. To compensate for this they have good shooty, good mobility, and good pyschic powers. They have some decent close combat troops (i dunno any sub 20 point model that comes with power weapons) just remember they all still have only toughness 3 and armor values not as strong as marines. Your assaults as an eldar play should leave the enemy force with little to attack back with (as eldar you'll get to attack first in most melee fights). Eldar try not to get themselves killed, orks expect it. Then there's space marines who simply wear enough armor to prevent it.. but that's another subject (don't play marines please.)

Orks are more simple. They have durable cheap troops that on the charge are extremely vicious. You can put enough guns on the table to negate their low ballistic skill. A mob of 30 orks will be more then a match for any 10 man squad eldar can muster, and be equal to or less then them in point cost. Used in concert though your eldar will make the ork player feel helpless. Dancing out of range with 2nd moves during assault phases, psychic powers making your volleys more effective, even units that can leave combat at their own desire.

Eldar tend to evoke more thoughtful purposeful feelings when played, orks are a little more fun and primal. You can craft an eldar force to really ruin a friends day. Though the trick is making one that can perform against all comers.

Lastly, the orks do have a lot of new models and deals with the assualt on blackreach set coming out, but your force will be larger and require more models bought and painted, the eldar will be smaller in number (unless you field a guardian force like an ulthwe world.)

I have an ork and eldar army.

Orks = Hammers
Eldar = Razors

It really comes down to how you want to play. As Badxample says, Orks are more fun cos they are can be unreliable in a way that makes you laugh when it happens.

Generally Eldar do what you want them to do and if you lose it's your fault :)

BTW: I hate the new run rules as I used fleet of foot to run AWAY from stuff not to it. Now eldar can only run away as fast as other slower troops can run towards them.

Yea the new rule has definately made the other armies faster. When u take into account waagh orks can even pretend to be eldar for a turn (it only takes one fleet of foot to assault, the rest of the time u can just run.)

Personally i consider eldar as a challenge on my part. Where orks have a sledgehammer to crush the rock. I have only a small chisel, but if i use it to hit the stress lines of said rock i can break it with less effort and move more quickly to. *analogy gets carried away*

I think these guys have pretty much summed it all up. but from the point of veiw of someone that has only ever played Eldar i can only add this:

Eldar have so many units to choose from with so many different purposes. With this in mind there are so many styles that they can play. I can easily sit down in an afternoon and put together 10 army lists that are all comletely different. One end of the scale you might have loads of mech, maybe all skimmers, and then as already mentioned a guardian army.

The best thing about collecting Eldar, is that as you army gets bigger and bigger it doesn't just grow in size, it grows in variety which in turn means you can play, just say, 5 games in a row with a differnt army list each time. You don't have to play a 3000 point game because you have that many points, you can just swap things arouund and play 1500 points. Most armies rely on particualer troops choices, Eldar don't. I can't think of any army that has that luxury.

Besides, they look pretty cool!

My favorite part about using Eldar is the satisfaction that comes from seeing all your units working in concert to wreak serious havoc on your opponent. An Eldar army hits the enemy where it hurts and avoids getting hit. When you win with Eldar, its usually a crushing victory. The flip side to that is if you lose, chances are you lose badly. Eldar are not quite as forgiving an army to use as some others (including Orks) but the rewards are great.

Plus, I personally think that Eldar have the most interesting looking models as well.
