How about joining the imperial guard? Lots of cool modelling opportunities, and they are rather different to space marines (plus they're one of the stronger armies in 5th).
That or maybe Eldar, that's a far cry from most marines (more fragile and trickier to use properly), plus they have a wealth of beautiful models screaming (literally in the case of the banshees ) to be converted.
Go for the DE! They're great fun to use, require tactics (shock horror!) and has wonderful conversion opportunities. The only negative is they can be a tad tricky to get hold of, but even so, give em a go!
Imperial Guard; Many of the units aren't hard to find, and your entire army can easily be an interesting modeling/conversion opportunity if you wish. It's also easy to find junk or non-GW bits that are compatible with the models.
I've seen some pretty impressive Orks conversions around our local club. That said, almost everyone in there plays them, and they are an army that doesn't require much in terms of thinking on your side. You just move all the green towards the opponent and shoot and chop along the way.
Another options are the Eldar and the Imperial Guard. I'd say possibly the Guard have more choice, due to the large number of regiments described in the codex. Plus, their fluff and vehicles are amazing!
Eldar is a good choice, i too am a recent convert to the pointy heads.
