XV8 Crisis Commander build

I was looking through the crisis suit builds, and noticed that there was no note on the setup i have on my commander

Shas'o
Cyclic Ion Blaster
Airbursting fragmentation projector
Vectored Retrothrusters
Hard-wired Multi-tracker

So far it has worked decently well for me, and the VRTs have actually saved my commander more than once (stupid warp spiders)

I find that the AFP blast and the assault 5 from the CIB (with some decent rolling) provide plenty of firepower.

Does anyone else use this, or have an opinion on it?

Generally, I think the view is that a Shas'o is overpriced, and one should take a shas'el instead, with a targeting array to up his BS.

Additionally, taking a blast weapon like the AFP on such a high BS model seems wasteful - why not take it on a model with a lower BS, sinc eit will have a similar level of effectiveness.

I've never tried that setup myself, though, so I can't offer an informed opinion per se.

...
cib is nice. one of my personal favorites. afp...why, oh why, on a shas'o? it wastes your ballistic skill. if you really want a guess range large blast so bad, take it on one of your deathrain team leaders or something. the ranges match iirc, and the targets sorta match. vrt...it's alright, but it takes up a spot where you could have a targeting array and thus drop him from an 'o to an 'el, saving some points. hwmt is a standard option, always a good pick. my personal favorite is:

shas'el
cyclic ion blaster
burst cannon/plasma rifle (depending on what i feel like. generally, i take burst cannon, considering how 5th ed gives pretty much EVERYONE a 4+ cover save.)
t-array
hw multitracker
hw drone controller w/ 2 shield drones OR hw stim injector

Shas'O's are not actually seen as a waste it entirely depends on the build u take for them like fireknifes are best as El's but the Shield'O or the Ninja'O is obviously for O's

If you give your commander a stimulant injector the he is basically classified as a ninja'O and would probably a rather effective one at that i cant see anything wrong with him other than the lack of stimulant injector

Go destroy more enemies in the name of the Greater Good with it

Personally I run a Fire Knife El as I really just need him there to support my two Monat Deathrains and Ta-Ro-Cha Burning Eye team. He's a great little APC and light tank killer on his own, and if the Burning Eye's need that much more plasma fire to kill a unit, he can move to assist them rapidly.

I usually put the Ion blaster/AFB on a Shas'Vre in my Burning Eye unit, as they will getclose enough to make such weapons viable, despite having a lower BS. The CIB would likely be more effective on the El, but I just need the El to remain flexible and a crackshot jack of all trades for my army.

if you have it on an el' and replace the plasma rifle your most likely to get 4 maybe 5 if your lucky hits and then against normal guys a rend or 2 and against vehicles with a rend you can kill a monolith (with 2 6's i might add :D)

So if your gna take CIB remove ur plasma rifle for your crisis suit builds (i take him with the plasma though but i have a full deathrain squad)

I don't use Shas'o's but that doesn't mean they're useless! IMHO, there are two compelling reasons to use a Shas'o.

1. To take advantage of his higher LD. I would attach this character to a full squad of Crisis suits -- or possibly a unit of Broadsides -- to help ensure they stay on the board. He's not so expensive that having that extra pip of LD isn't worth what you spend on it. You can also pawn non-insta-killing wounds onto this guy to absorb damage! Especially given True Line of Sight ... your (well, my) suits suffer a lot more enemy fire than they used to. Keeping them unwounded and on the table longer must be seen as A Good Thing.

2. To expand the BS 5 weaponry loadout and make the unit uber-flexible. You can thus fill all three mandatory hard points with varying weapons (e.g., plasma rifle/missile pod/fusion blaster, or plasma rifle/CIB/fusion blaster, or ... you get the picture) and then take a HW multi-tracker and fire any two you need that particular game turn at maximum BS. It's a bit pricey, but it can be handy.

If neither of those points are useful enough to your style of playing, then I would say stick with the Shas'el, always equip with a targetting array, and take advantage of the points savings.

Regarding the AFP on Shas'os (or Shas'els), given the scatter rules for blast templates in 5th edition, it is totally not a waste to equip your commanders with that weapon! Most of my lists include two commanders, one PR/CIB and the other PR/AFP. You have to get close to use the AFP, so subracting 5" off of every scatter roll has proven to be a godsend. I love that guy, and heartily recommend the loadout. He's fantastic at taking out units in cover or hordes.

I chose to go with the 'o because i wanted the bs and needed the hard point for the VRT.
I thought the AFP would be a good choice for a hit and run jump troop with the lone character rules. The extra LD doesn't hurt either

That, and my friend always tries to tie up my commander with his fast moving units, so I need to get him at least farther away than part of another unit, so the lone character rule kicks in.

I use him as a deus ex machina to get my pathfinders out of trouble sometimes if they get stuck somewhere.
When the enemy is firing from decent cover and I don't want my unit to get murdered if I put them in LoS, the AFP has a chance of getting up to support them quickly on a lone character.

I find it easier to keep a lone charater out of sight rather than three or four.

The other thing I've noticed is that (at least with my friends) people move some of their untis a little to try and hit my HQ while he's running around. They stop shooting as much at my other troops, and I might be able o herd them into LoS of my railheads.

Just a little reasoning behind picking the build...
(Constructive critisism of my tactics might also be appreciated)

That would be on the to wound roll. its based around the Rending rule without the extra tank busting. quote " designed to combat multiple, lightly armored enemies the [CIB] generates a rapid stream of ion radiation"

good for squishing infantry but useless on tanks cause armor plates > radiation :act-up:

And we all know how useless those weapons are at tank busting... :watermelon:

it would be interesting to do a diorama of something glowing from all that radiation.

"OMG sargent Atticus is glowing!!" - Trooper Doyls before his squad lost contact with command.
