Tips & ideas on a beginners model

well then, im a super nooby when it comes to painting. Basically have no experience of the act throughout my life so far. I've semi finished 13 genestealers, 8 hormagaunts and 1 zoanthrope. The zoanthrope is the most painted, but i just cant decide what i want to do with it. So here it is...

C&C is more than welcome, obviously.... Be as harsh as you possibly want to be.
I tried to do a gradual change on the carapace, but the i added to much of the lighter paint to my mix and well, i got that colour. But i think it looks kinda cool. I was thinking of throwing a black was over the carapace to darken it and give it some shading, then use the same colour again on the edges of the pieces.

Talons and mouth still need to be done...

And the sking needs another layer. Then comes highlighting.

That's what im thinking at the moment, but i would appreciate any advice given :D

Nice job overall.

If you're going to wash the carapace, do NOT use black! That's a brownish color, so you want a brown wash. The transitions could be blended together a little better, but some washes and/or glazes should help a lot.

Do thinner highlights, apply the paint along an adge and use a dry, smallish brush to 'drag' the paint along, as it is dragged it thins out giving a more natural transition. It does need to be done swiftly before the paint sticks too well and you end up with a rather stubborn line :D

The starkness is quite attractive though, it's an interesting effect.

I agree on you that the skin needs another layer/wash and a highlight to make it look more three dimensional and 'complete' it needs a little something and looks like what you've said.

How are you going to do the teeth and claws? If you haven't decided, may I suggest lighter, boney colours? Where you currently have such strong colours popping quitte nicely together, something light and brighter will help bring them both out more, where as if you use the carapace colours, it may be too dominating over the model.

A very nice job though, looking forward to seeing more of the force.

Excellent looking Zoanthrope and I'm intrigued by the paint scheme!
But as for tips on making it better, I agree with your own idea of washing it and re-highlighting it with the same color. I also agree with Canew on using a brown wash rather than black, though black can still work if you have nothing else (no problem making your own wash by mixing in a small amount of the desired color with water. Just enough color to leave a trace but not enough so the background color does not shine through. Did that for years before Gw washes came along ^^)

The Claws and teeth are very black, I'd see about finding a color you like for those since those can really help make the model pop more. Since the carapace is so dark, having those a brighter color will make them stand out and get noticed.

And something that I noticed right away was the basing. Damn nice job! I see so few beginners start basing right away and it adds so much to the model!

It's certainly tabletop quality and I look forward to seeing more of your work! Post those Genestealers and gaunts when you're ready with 'em!

Thanks for all the compliments  (Cant think of another word right now...)

I'll go over him with a nice brown wash as per Canew's advice.
Then I'll give 8people's highlighting tip a go... Gonna be my first time attepting it like that...

I left the Claws and teeth black because i wasnt to sure what to do with them... i was originally going to do it the same as the carapace, but now that you guys mention it, that might be a bit harsh. So a boney color it is!!!
Should i leave a little bit of the black sticking out at the top of the claws? and then work my way down to a stained bone color? with the tips being full white?

PrOtOcoN: I redid the base for 2 main reasons.
1: I dont like the Zoan's original base.
2: My brother's cat found him on the table... Then magically my Zoan found the floor.

Thanks for all the advice!!! Will give it all a go tommorow or hopefully day after. Hope i have time.
