Is the Piranha still a viable choice in 5th? or did it become nearly useless in the rules change? What is YOUR opinion on it?

Piranha have never been an obviously optimal unit (as opposed to say, railheads). And I say this as a huge fan of them. :)

However, they look fantastic, and I love the little sneaky tricks you can pull with them. I have more fun with my Tau when I include a pair of Piranha than when I don't.

And I have seen at least two competitive Tau lists that rely heavily on Piranhas. In the 2008 Adepticon Gladiator tournament, one Tau player brought a list with twelve Piranha. One of my local gamer buddies always runs his Tau with between 4 and 8 of them.

So they have their uses, and can be used as part of seriously competitive lists. But they take some getting used to and require a different tactical approach to playing the army than "the usual" tactics.

How did the dude do in the tournie and how successful is the player with 8 Piranhas.? Personally I have never seen a competitive Piranha heavy list. 12 Piranhas in 1850 pts is not sensible. For a start the minimum cost for that lot is 720pts and that is without ANY upgrades at all, that is close to half the points of the total list cost. It is tactically restrictive to use that many Piranhas and he would have to have them in squadrons which makes them even more vulnerable. I am curious to know just how well the player did.

I'm not sure how well the Adepticon player did. It was Gladiator (2000 pts), which I had no interest in myself, and only had a few minutes to talk to him. At the time I saw him, he had won his first game ('nids, I think) and was leading in the middle of his 2nd (Orks).

My friend with the multi-Piranha list I've mentioned a few times now. He won our last league ( 10-0 ) and regularly places in local and regional tourneys with that list. He plays other armies, too, and beats us all with them as well. Just a darn good player. What I've noticed about this list is that the large squadrons are very survivable and rarely give up KPs in Annihilation games, yet they're extremely valuable for setting up mobile terrain that doesn't typically block line of sight. He uses them to restrict the movement options of his opponents, funneling them into lanes of concentrated firepower. Very cool.
