Hello

I am new to the Librarium forums and new to the 40k universe for that matter. I recently split an Assault On Black Reach box with my brother as well as a Devastator squad box. I would like to expand on what I have now, but I am not sure which direction to go. I would like to work up to the 1000 point range without breaking the bank. I was looking at getting the Space Marine Battleforce but I was not keen on using either the scouts of the assault squad that comes with it. I would like to have more of a shooting army. I figured I could put the 5 man combat squad with my Devastator Squad (which still need their heavy weapon selection configured, along with the two tactical squad). Was also looking at a a 2nd Rhino if I were to pick up the Battleforce set along with a Thunderfire Cannon since I would more often than not be going against my brothers Boyz heavy army. Forgive me for the long winded post and thanks for your time and advise. :soldier:

PS Nothing I could dig up via the search function spoke to what I am looking for.

Forgot to mention I would not be fielding the dred that came with the Assault on Black Reach Set as it does not appeal to my play style. I would however like to make use to the Terminators that came with it.

First thing you should do is ask to be in the next mega battle at GW. This will give you a better feel for the army and they should explain a lot more of the rules and how to play.

As for expanding your force... Once again i would head off to GW and make some friend in the community, and ask around if anyone has an extra assault cannon arm or missile launcher for terminators. This will make them a heck of a lot better, and make them worth taking. For a list of items to buy i would start with a second tactical squad. This will give you the troops choices you need for a game. If i read correctly you bought a devastator box? At first i thought it was split with your brother but that didnt make much sense.

For a more shooty army you were dead right that a battle force is probably not for you. It does have some nice stuff in it and should be considered later on if you want to expand your force with any of those squads. The rhino for instance is a nice tool on the battlefield for grabbing objectives or running away quickly.

I can see the thunderfire doing great against his orks, as long as you keep them away. After that, sternguard are nice and a few attack bikes with heavy bolters can really do some hurt for a relatively low cost.

Hope that helped!

Now for the other opinion.

Why not take the Battleforce? Scouts and Assault? If you can buy/find/trade their weapons for Sniper weapons you will have Shooty Scouts. And they wotk I can assure you! As for the Scouts and since you want a shooty army I would say keep them. You will always be outnumbered and outgunned to most of the armies out there and when you will be facing Assaulty armies you will be needing some fast-response units to hot zones. To get the pressure off the shooters!

The Dread is an excellent piece to use. Now if you are not satisfied with it's current guns you can always buy/find/trade weapons to make it more shooty! But it's up to you. I thought you should hear both ends of the story to make your mind...

And don't forget! This is a hobby and you can always buy/find/trade your needs! Most of us do! :act-up:

Thanks for all the replies so far. Some very good advise. Now, I don't have to field the Terminators, I just think they are too cool not to, and getting them in a package deal for $60 when a single box by itself of them goes for $50 (even though you would be able to arm those however you want). I figured they would be a good distraction on the battlefield while the rest of my army sits back and takes them from range. Are Rhinos a must if I am aiming for a shooting army? I figured if anything they would help by providing cover and distorting my opponents line of sight. Kind of expensive for what they do at this point when i could use that money to get some more bodies and guns out there. A guy at my local game shop mentioned picking up a couple boxes of the Sternguard Veterans. Thanks again.

For 1000 points, the low-tech Dread and un-equipped Termies are for you. Storm Bolters, Power Fist, 2+ Armour and 5+ invulnerable saves are pretty decent without adding Assault Cannons and Missile Launchers.

If you're gonna get the Battleforce, I'd seeriously consider just using the Assault Squad. It's always good to have a fast-response unit that can move in and cut down a few fools or tie up nasty CC units (especially considering your brother is playing Orks) so they don't get to the precious shooty units.

Trust me, my Assault Squad was my first unit, and one of the deadliest. No matter what army you're building, I'd always take at least 2 Fast Attack choices.

If not, then at least half of your units should be mounted in Rhinos/Razorbacks.

interesting thing about termys >1000 there great not many armies have or expect to need a AP2 weps at this level 1500-2000 not so good here enough AP2 to go around 2000< good again you have enough points to buy other stuff so its not the end of the world when they get ripped on tips if its shoot dont even dare buy a 5 man combat squad 2 if your sneaky like me and dont mind annoying ppls to a point then 2 rhinos can be placed 2 inchs from each other with a unit behind them the opponunts unit cant get though and you can shoot back isnt as good in 5th edition cos of the cover but if you good you can ignore that Cough sternguard dragonfire cough

Don't bother shelling out for the expensive metal sternguard, you can just convert plastic Tactical marines. Add bits from the BT or DA upgrade sprue, Commander/Command Squad box and so on.

Actually, I'd highly recommend picking up the DA Veteran box. You have enough bits to make 10 robed Veterans (perfect for Sternguard, Command Squads, Veteran Sergeants, and so on), plus extra bits for your Terminators and Dreadnought, including an assault cannon. Unfortunately you only get 5 bases, so scrounge around for extra.

Beyond that, vehicles are always a good pick. Rhinos, Predators, Vindicators, Land Speeders are all good. More Tacticals are also needed to make up your 2 Troops.

Thanks again for replies. Been puttering around using The Forge software and came up with some interesting builds. First off, I figured I would pick up another Assault on Black Reach box and use the 10 man tactical with that and I would also try and field the two dreads I would then have (Looked online for some extra dread weapons and could easily have some bits sent my way). Going this route would also yield quite a few extra Boyz for my brothers army among, other things. I would then have 2 dreads, geared however I see fit, 2 10 man tactical squads (looking into having them both split into 5 man combat squads 4xBolters + 1xHeavy Wep and 4xBolters + 1x Sergeant, two of those combination) my devestator squad (thinking 2x ML's and 2x PC to maximize template use on his Orks) with a few extra marines thrown in there for early casualties. Lastly, I was thinking about going with 1-2 squads of Sternguard Veterans based on how many points I had left to work with. I would mod other models but I don't have access to very many spare bits at this time. With this I figured I could wait until I expand into the 1500 point range to add in transports, tanks, and the Terminators. Let me know what you all think. Oh and one last thing (sorry haha). Should I use the captain that came with the AOBR set or would a specific HQ be better suited for what I'm wanting to do? Thanks a million. :soldier:

they are different sizes if your trying to get black reach stuff on a normal dread then on the bottom of the gun its flat and then a little bump at the front but the dreads wep pin in that bump
