Hey new to the forum and the 40k universe. I have probably a redundant question but can I use enamel paint instead of acrylic? Second question do I have to do anything special when im watering down colors for washes and so forth?

Thanks for any help

Enamels take overnight to dry, and are very shiny, while acrylics are quick to dry and have a flat finish. You should use acrylics unless you are very experienced with enamels.

No, you just have to add water to the paint to make a wash.

If you plan to make washes with enamels its not going to work with just water. Enamel paint requires the use of thinners to then them down as they are thick out of the bottle. They can be used but your best bet is with acrylic paints as the can be thinned down with water and don't require thinners to clean the brush.

Thanks for your help I just wanted to know because I used to paint gundam models using Model Masters enamels and they all turned out really good but I could understand the whole waiting overnight to dry aspect as well and the fact that you can thin acrylic with water not having to use alot of paint thinner. thanks again

if you look at the new Forgeworld book on their advanced painting tips they are using a lot of oil paints. I haven't experimented with these, but my mother actually does a lot of landscape painting with oils and some of the effects are mindblowing.

I have used enamels but the skillset is a wholely different affair than using acrylics.. i'm fairly convinced that you may be able to produce some very very nicely painted models, but the timeframe would put me off.. i like the fact that things dry quickly.
