Dear beloved Space Marines of the Emperor,

I have noticed a number of threads and messages about people modeling and painting Pre-Heresy Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines. I'm curious what you find so fascinating about them? I have some guesses, but I'd rather hear it straight from you all:)

Thank you,
Frankie

Generally i believe that they are popular because it gives a new outlook on marines: different or less equipement, older look and the change to play with loayalist World Eaters.
And the same reason why fantasy is popular: the sense of history, of reenacting "historic" events. The same reason why people would make a Black Templars army from a specific theatre or crusade.

Personally; it just adds a lot of character to an army.

Honestly, I find the fluff for the 41st millennium fairly flat. It's just thoroughly unbelievable to me. 40k has spent ten thousand years unable to make any scientific advancements, despite having gone from chipped rocks to nuclear bombs in less time on only a single planet, with less population, and without any prior art. The combination of control and incompetence shown by the imperial government is either hard to believe, or unbelievably depressing, neither of which is a particularly attractive option to me. I don't really see any powerful themes to overshadow these flaws.

With pre-heresy, and during the heresy as well, however you lose a lot of the problems and gain some powerful themes that you can focus on in place of flaws in the universe. There are still plenty of heavy handed moments in the storytelling but they're easier to ignore. Plus, during that era, there's still a feeling that what you do could make a difference.

Another reason is mainly due to the opening up of the background material through the horus heresy series. Up until recently everyone knew the general outline of the story but now that the books are fleshing out the history it adds a whole new dimension to what people thought they knew. A good example are the world eaters who several people plan on doing. The general conception previously was that they were already blood lusting maniacs dedicated to slaughter above all else. The novels acknowledge that they were indeed blood thirsty, even in comparison to the legions at the time, but they were merely making the best use of what they were. plus the fact that there were indeed members of the traitor legions who remained loyal, not to mention that based on teh novels the alpha legion were never traitor at all

I have an obsession with Custodian Guard atm and I am looking at making my own army with rules and everything for them in the style of Grey Knights :D

With regard to your question, I personally find the fluff for heresy and pre-heresy absolutely brilliant. I prefer the idea of Space Marine Legions of 100,000+ men that could effortlessly annihilate all who stood in their way during the Great Crusade rather than the pathetic 1000-man Chapters we have now. The Imperium was much more powerful before the heresy (obviously) but the fact that they have failed to make any kind of technological advancement in 10,000 years other than finding more Standard Template Constructs is a little odd.

the alpha legion were never traitor at all
With regard to this, I don't believe they actually were (obviously the books say not) but rather they just tried a little too hard because they were the last of the First Founding Legions and then they fell out with the Ultramarines and distanced themselves from the Imperium.

Regarding the Alpha legion: My look on it is that they saw the truth and that the only right thing to do, for mankind and the emperor was to end it in one swift strike. Instead of more then 10 millenia of endless suffering wich will inevidently end in absolute destruction anny way.

But thats just me :)

Like Alpharius told the imperial commander (before he killed him),"For the emporer." He fell because he had to in order to save his father (he kind of didn't since he's a corpse on a throne). Basically so the imperium would win the battle for Terra. Which is why Alpha Legion will be my next chaos army, love the fluff (not pre heresy not a lot about em' aside from "Legion" damn secretive legion.)

But to get on topic the HH books have opened a door that people want to re-create. At Adepticon this year 4 guys brought the entire Mournival from the Luna wolves Legion. I'm doing World eaters because I liked Brother Captain Skraal from "battle for the abyss" which was poorly written btw. Made me go back and check some other things and well....I dont know I just liked the fluff.

I sold my Pre-heresy Iron Hands which I created because some friends said I was Ferrus. They were based off the istvaan 3 massacre. Everything was in a drop pod and I had converted Balhaan and Santar. I had fun building, painting it, and playing it. I won some best general, and paint awards. Even beat Emporers children armies :soldier:.

Basically because it's fun!

If I was to actually make an army of preheresy SM it would have to be World Eaters as I have a fascination with them now they are Chaos and it'd be a break from the Eldar :D

But at the moment Adeptus Custodes are the way I am going regarding pre-heresy.

The only thing I don't understand is the obsession with World Eaters. I mean sure, I would probably take them by preference, but EVERYONE who chooses to make a preheresy force seems to be obsessed with them. I don't understand what everyone loves so much about them over chapters like the Thousand Sons.

I think it's twofold: there is a huge difference between their characters and the older armor, the white and blue just contrast so lovely with the bezerker mindset. And i think it's to do with the simple fact that khornate bezerkers are so popular to begin with.
